On October 18, 1984, the Rockwell B-1B Lancer took flight for the first time. The B-1B is a four-crew strategic bomber that combines stealth features with highly sophisticated defensive avionics. The B-1 was the result of the Air Force's Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft (AMSA) program of 1965 to find a low-altitude penetration nuclear bomber to replace the B-52 Stratofortress. The program officially became the B-1A and a Rockwell design was selected for further development in 1970. The first B-1A prototype flew in 1974 but President Carter cancelled production in 1977. The B-1 was resurrected in 1981 under President Reagan and 100 improved production B-1s, designated the B-1B, were ordered. Compared with the B-1A, the B-1B features improved avionics, external hardpoints for fuel and weapons, individual ejection seats for the crew and use of radar-absorbent material. Variable-sweep wings enable the bomber to operate from shorter runways than the B-52 and can be swept back for high subsonic and supersonic flight. The B-1B entered service initially as a nuclear bomb carrier and was later modified to carry conventional weapons. It was first used in combat in support against Iraq during Operation Desert Fox in 1998. During the first six months of Operation Enduring Freedom, eight B-1Bs dropped nearly 40 percent of all ordnance delivered by coalition air forces. The aircraft is known as the "Bone" after the "B-One".

Happy birthday Huey
The Bell UH-1 Iroquois flew for the first time on October 20, 1956. The Iroquois, or Huey, began as the Bell 204 in response to a 1955 Army requirement for a turbine utility helicopter, primarily for medevac. It was designated XH-40, then HU-1 (hence 'Huey'), and eventually became UH-1 when aircraft designation systems merged in 1962. The UH-1 was the first mass-produced helicopter powered by a turbine engine and the powerplant was one of the keys to it's success. Mounted on the roof behind the gearbox, it left the cabin unencumbered and provided the performance requested by the Army. The UH-1 is indelibly linked with Vietnam War, where it proved the importance and value of helicopter air mobility to land warfare. In addition to carrying troops, the type also took on other roles including training, search and rescue, VIP transport and assault missions! Later models with twin engines provided greater safety and extended range with increased carrying capacity. With over 16,000 manufactured in a number of variants, the Huey is the most widely produced helicopter in the Western world!

The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye flew for the first time on October 21, 1960. The E-2 was the first aircraft built from the ground up as an Airborne Early Warning (AEW) platform. Nicknamed the "Hummer" by its crews, the Hawkeye was designed to replace the E-1 Tracer, which was a derivative of the Grumman S-2 Tracker Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft. Originally designed for carrier operations, the Hawkeye is operated from land bases by several export customers. Launched ahead of other carrier aircraft and the last to return to the deck, the E-2 radar system can manage more than 600 tracks over land and water and detect targets anywhere within a three million cubic mile envelope!

Sixty-seven years ago today, the Grumman HU-16 Albatross took flight for the first time. An amphibian Search-And-Rescue (SAR) aircraft, the Albatross plucked downed combat pilots out of hostile waters in Korea and Vietnam. Originally designated as the SA-16 for the Air Force and the UF-1 for the Navy and Coast Guard, it was redesignated as the HU-16 in 1962. Grumman built 466 Albatrosses between 1947 and 1961 and more than a dozen countries operated the Albatross in South America, Europe and Asia.

On November 4, 1968, the Aero Vodochody L-39 Albatros took flight for the first time. Originally designed to replace the L-29 Delfín as a combat training aircraft in Czechoslovakia, Aero Vodochody built over 2,800 aircraft between 1972 and 1999. The Albatros is the most widely used jet trainer in the world and has gained popularity among the private warbird community due to it's low operational cost and high reliability. Several aerobatic display teams operate the L-39 including the Patriots Jet Team, the Breitling Jet Team, the Hoppers and the Black Diamond Jet Team.
