Борбе су избиле између етиопских савезних снага и побуњеника из Тиграја у региону Афар, уз сукобе у Абали и Еребтију и упозорења хуманитарних организација да би се насиље могло проширити, преноси АФП.
Снаге TPLF-а су наводно заузеле аеродром у Мекелеу, главном граду Тиграја.
Седам етиопских милиција, укључујући TPLF, формирало је савез са циљем свргавања актуелне владе.

Nedavno sam od jednog klijenta koji je Etiopljanin i radi za UN čuo da kruže glasine da je stvarni razlog za zatvaranje ambasade Srbije u Etiopiji i spuštanje nivoa diplomatskih odnosa između Srbije i Etiopije taj što smo mi pomagali separatistima, a to se zvaničnim vlastima, logično nije svidelo

Mislim da je prepucavanje oko višemilionske imovine, koja 60 godina nije uknjižena kako treba, mnogo prostiji i logičniji razlog. Nakon zatvaranja imali smo povremene velike međusobne izlive ljubavi, UAE podržava zvaničnu vladu, a mislim da još nigde nismo išli protiv UAE u tom delu sveta.

At the same time, relations between Ethiopia and its neighboring country, Egypt, are very strained and have worsened since the beginning of the new civil war, raising the possibility of Egyptian military intervention in the conflict.
