Citat:Pentagon to Test a Huge Conventional Bomb

By Ann Scott Tyson
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 31, 2006; Page A09

A huge mushroom cloud of dust is expected to rise over Nevada's desert in June when the Pentagon plans to detonate a gigantic 700-ton explosive -- the biggest open-air chemical blast ever at the Nevada Test Site -- as part of the research into developing weapons that can destroy deeply buried military targets, officials said yesterday.

The test, code-named "Divine Strake," will occur on June 2 about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas in a high desert valley bounded by mountains, according to Pentagon and Energy Department officials.

"This is the largest single explosive we could imagine doing," said James A. Tegnelia, director of the Pentagon's Defense Threat Reduction Agency, which is conducting the test.

The test is aimed at determining how well a massive conventional bomb would perform against fortified underground targets -- such as military headquarters, biological or chemical weapons stockpiles, and long-range missiles -- that the Pentagon says are proliferating among potential adversaries around the world.

Tegnelia said there is a range of technical hurdles to overcome. He suggested that big conventional bombs are unlikely to solve the overall problem of buried threats. "It's a lot easier to dig your tunnel 50 feet deeper" than to develop weapons that can destroy it, he told a meeting of defense reporters.

Such a bomb would be a conventional alternative to a nuclear weapon proposed by the Bush administration, which has run into opposition on Capitol Hill. The Pentagon for several years has sought funding for research into the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP) -- also known as the "bunker buster" -- after the administration's 2001 Nuclear Posture Review stated that no weapon in the U.S. arsenal could threaten a growing number of buried targets. Congress, however, has repeatedly refused to grant funding for a study on a nuclear bunker buster, instead directing money toward conventional alternatives.

The June test will detonate 700 tons of heavy ammonium nitrate-fuel oil emulsion -- creating a blast equivalent to 593 tons of TNT -- in a 36-foot-deep hole near a tunnel in the center of the Nevada Test Site, according to official reports. It aims to allow scientists to model the type of ground shock that will be created, and to weigh the effectiveness of such a weapon against its collateral impact.

"To my knowledge, this will be the largest open-air chemical explosion that we've conducted," said Darwin Morgan, spokesman for the Energy Department's test site. Larger blasts have been carried out at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, including the nation's biggest open-air detonation, in 1985, a Pentagon spokeswoman said.

The blast is not likely to be felt or heard outside the 1,375-square-mile test site, and the cloud of dust is expected to dissipate quickly from view, Morgan said. "They don't think people will see it in the base camp on the south end of the test site," he said.

Officials took pains to differentiate between the June conventional experiment and past nuclear testing. "The U.S. has no plans to conduct a nuclear test. President Bush supports a continued moratorium on nuclear testing," said Irene Smith, a spokeswoman for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). The Pentagon agency is charged with countering threats to the United States from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons.

On a related topic, Tegnelia said the State Department and the Pentagon are developing a proposal for a $100 million effort to help Libya get rid of tons of mustard gas and some precursor chemicals being stored in the Libyan desert. "The Libyans requested some support" from the U.S. government, and a DTRA team has visited Libya to consider various options for eliminating the weapons, he said.

Weapons Test or Divine Provocation?

Code Name of the Week: Divine Strake

In the tricky world of deterrence, where the United States is pressuring Iran to give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for a promise of the rule of law and implied security, do we really need divine intervention?

The United States is set conduct its largest ever conventional explosives test in June by detonating a 700 ton mass of fuel oil. The test will gauge the American ability to attack enemy underground facilities associated with weapons of mass destruction. The brilliant minds at the Pentagon call this test "Divine Strake."

The Washington Post's whiz bang story on Friday about the planned detonation has provoked a small firestorm.

Minority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said in a statement he is concerned that a test of this magnitude will have an adverse effect on his state, particularly after a Defense Department spokesman said that the test at the Nevada Test Site will put a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas for the first time in decades.

Others -- such as the Federation of American Scientists -- have focused on the mock nuclear bunker buster character of the 700 ton explosion (the largest regular conventional bomb in the U.S. arsenal is ONE ton).

And then there's the name.

The Pentagon is planning some kind of huge explosion in the Nevada desert.
By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon plans to detonate 700 tons of conventional high explosives in Nevada in a June 2 test designed to gauge the effectiveness of weapons against deeply buried targets, officials said on Thursday. […]

The test, dubbed “Divine Strake,” is sponsored by Tegnelia’s agency and is set to be conducted at the Energy Department’s Nevada Test Site in Nye County, about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
“Divine Strake”? Am I dreaming this period in U.S. history? Part of Bush’s “crusade” in the Middle East, I suppose. Just one more way to increase America’s popularity all around the world.

USA! USA! USA!

“All explosives, given the right thermal characteristics, will create a cloud that may resemble a mushroom cloud,” the Defense Threat Reduction Agency said in a statement.

“The dust cloud from Divine Strake may reach an altitude of 10,000 feet and is not expected to be visible off the Nevada Test Site.”

Nuclear tests at the site sent mushroom clouds billowing high into the air and became tourist attractions in the 1950s, but surface tests ended in the early 1960s.

I can just see the internal memos: “Let our enemies realize that we can utterly destroy their cities even without nuclear weapons. Henceforward, they will have no choice but to obey our iron commands.”

Note to Rove: it won’t work. For reasons you will never understand, people in most places have some dignity and self-respect. They cannot be forced into line by your cheap threats.

....iz jednog foruma :

Citat:So now they are testing an explosion with the force of a mini nuke, in an underground bunker, which they state is to test the results/damage to the hard granite bunker.

Does anyone besides me think that they've had these mini nukes for a while now, and now that they are getting close to this war with Iran, where they will probably use them, they need to perform a test to see exactly how effective they are.

If they use them to take out nuke/bio/chem facilities like they state, what happens if the explosion isn't contained underground. yay, now instead of just having radiation in the air, there is biological/chemical weapons as well...although with that sort of explosion there may be a chance that the bio/chem weapons would become innefective, as the arcticle says, i just don't buy it. but you never know.

It just sounds like really odd timing, the beginning of June...sounds like a rush rush job to test this out. Did that plan ever completely fall out to store nuclear waste in nevada bunkers? if so, i wouldnt' doubt it if they were using it a bunker already built for the waste =P

Ron Jeremy ::Justice ::
