US Air Force plans to request 72 fighters every year

Top Air Force leaders have said for years that it needs to buy at least 72 new fighters each year to both modernize its fighter fleet and lower the age of the average plane. If it doesn’t bring on that many new fighters annually, generals warn, the service won’t have enough new aircraft to replace aging and retiring fighters, such as the F-15C.

Citat:On 14 April 2023, the USMC will re-activate Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 311 from its former Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 311 Tomcats ('WL-xx') identity at MCAS Miramar (CA).
VMFA-311 will be the second operational USMC squadron to operate the carrier-based F-35C Lightning II version. The other squadron, also based at MCAS Miramar is VMFA-314 Black Knights ('VW-3xx'). The Black Knights have already completed one deployment with the new fighter, on board USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72).

The ceremony paid tribute to the service and dedication of the airmen and technical crew who flew the F-16s, which logged a total of 80,000 flight hours on missions across the globe, from Iraq to Afghanistan, Korea to Kuwait, Qatar to Romania, and Ukraine. As the 187th Fighter Wing prepares to transition to the F-35A Lightning II, the departure of the F-16s marks the end of a remarkable 35-year legacy, during which the Alabama National Guard unit flew the F-16s out of Dannelly Field longer than any other jet in its history combined. The F-16s will now be moved to other bases across the country for continued use, while the 187th Fighter Wing looks forward to welcoming the new era with the arrival of the F-35s later this year.
