Emerging reports indicate that roughly two dozen American and Nigerian Special Operations commandos, including members of the U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6, carried out a helicopter-borne assault on ISWAP terrorist leader Abu Bilal al-Mainuki’s hideout in the Lake Chad region.

According to U.S. officials quoted by The New York Times, the troops battled nearly three dozen ISWAP jihadists in an intense firefight that lasted close to three hours on two small islands in Lake Chad.

The mission was reportedly aimed at capturing al-Mainuki alive, but after it became clear he would not surrender, U.S. air assets bombed the area, killing the terrorist leader and several fighters.

No American or Nigerian military casualties were reported during the operation.
