Conflict Armament Research

Between 2 and 5 November 2022, a CAR field investigation team physically documented one Shahed-131 (marked 'ГЕРАНЬ-1') UAV, two Shahed-136 (marked 'ГЕРАНЬ-2') UAVs , and one Mohajer-6 UAV.
Investigators also documented one Qaem-5 precision guided munition that bears markings showing that it was manufactured in May 2022.
Iranian UAVs used by Russian forces in Ukraine include many recently manufactured components produced by companies mostly based in the United States.
CAR’s analysis reveals that each of these documented UAVs, as well as the precision-guided munition, is made almost exclusively of components produced by companies based in Asia, Europe, and the United States. CAR documented more than 500 components spanning some 200 unique models across the four UAVs (495 total) and the Qaem-5 (23). More than 70 manufacturers based in 13 different countries and territories produced these components

Multipurpose Iranian drone warheads used in Ukraine
In January 2023, a CAR field investigation team documented the warhead of an Iranian Shahed-131 single-use UAV. This is the first time that analysis of these warheads has been released in the public domain. CAR’s analysis shows that this multipurpose warhead was designed to ensure maximum damage to targets such as critical infrastructure, while also having a significant impact on the ability to undertake quick repair efforts.



CAR documented a number of notable
features:

The warhead is a cylinder approx-
imately 50 cm long and 16 cm wide.
The forward section of the warhead
includes a primary shaped charge.

There are 18 smaller shaped charges
around the circumference of the
warhead to generate a secondary
radial anti-armour effect.

The rear section features a fuze well
for a safety and arming device
the safety and arming
device also contains a detonator.

There are two pre-serrated
fragmentation matrixes, each made
of 11 layers of fragmentation cubes,
around the forward and rear
sections of the warhead;
these matrixes are designed to
generate an additional radial
fragmentation effect for soft-skin
targets
