Majority of Danes don’t want new fighter jets

Citat:Just weeks before the government reveals which new fighter jet will replace the ageing fleet of F-16s in the Danish Air Force, a new survey has revealed that most Danes are against the plans all together.

The survey, composed by Wilke on behalf of Jyllands-Posten newspaper, reveals that 53.3 percent of Danes are against spending upwards of 30 billion kroner on a new fleet of fighter jets. The news has put the defence minister, Peter Christiansen, in defence mode.

F35 fighter jets recommended to Danish government by expert group - radio

Citat:Denmark should buy 28 of Lockheed Martin's F35 Lightning fighter jets to replace its present F16 jets, an expert group formed by the Danish Ministry of Defence has recommended to the government, according to local radio.

The group found that the Lightning was better than Eurofighter's Typhoon and Boeing Co's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in four priority areas: military combat, economy, strategics and Danish industrial cooperation with the producer, Radio24syv said citing sources close to the negotiations.

F-35 Favored As Denmark Nears Fighter Decision

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets look likely to be chosen ahead of Boeing’s Super Hornet, the other contender for the Danish contract, despite Boeing's aggressive advertising campaign in Denmark.

Radio24syv reported on Thursday that the F-35 came top in a series of strategic, military, economic and industrial evaluations carried out by the Ministry of Defence,

Regardless of the final choice, the move to purchase the new aircraft has proven controversial, with commentators pointing out the expense of updating the Air Force relative to social welfare cuts.

Although the jets cost 550 million kroner ($85 million) each, the final cost is as yet unknown. According to the Radio24syv report, the total cost for 28 fighter aircraft over a 30-year lifespan including equipment and maintenance could run as high as 100 billion kroner ($15 billion).

Parliament is set to negotiate the exact number of jets - with preferences varying from 18 to “at least 30” amongst the various parties - as well as the nature of the contract for their order in the near future.

The Danish Prime Minister and the Defense Minister announced that the government is recommending Denmark purchase 27 F-35s at a price of 20 billion Danish Kroner, or about $3 billion. The next phase is an open debate in the Danish parliament, which is expected to last about a month before Denmark makes a final decision.

The Danish government chose the F-35 as the best option for its next-generation fighter fleet over Saab’s Gripen NG, Eurofighter’s Typhoon, and Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet. Although critics frequently slam the joint strike fighter for cost overruns, the Danish government concluded buying the F-35 would actually be the cheapest option to meet national security needs.
