Railgun Ammo-Firing Cannon Being Eyed By Air Force For Cruise Missile Defense (Updated)

The U.S. Air Force is asking for funds in its budget request for the 2023 Fiscal Year to build and test a prototype self-propelled gun designed to shoot down incoming cruise missiles. The service has presented the weapon, which could use ammunition originally developed for the U.S. Navy's abortive railgun program, primarily as a possible expeditionary base defense asset. However, it could have other applications, especially given renewed concerns about the threats that cruise missiles pose to military and other critical targets within the United States.

The Air Force's proposed budget for the 2023 Fiscal Year asks for almost $89.1 million to support various "lifecycle prototyping" activities, including the construction of "a C-130 transportable/deployable Hypervelocity Ground Weapon System (HGWS) prototype." It is unclear how much of that funding is expected to go to the HGWS effort specifically.

After this story was published, a reader alerted us to an additional section within the Pentagon's overall 2023 Fiscal Year budget request related to the HGWS. The Office of the Secretary of Defense's Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) is seeking $151 million to support HGWS development as part of a larger portfolio of work on what are described as "Advanced Innovative Technologies." It also notes that SCO received $3 million and $20 million in funding for HGWS research and development in Fiscal Years 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Railgun Ammo-Firing Air Defense Artillery Cannon Plans Laid Out By Army

The Army plans to field a highly mobile 155mm cannon firing hyper-velocity projectiles to provide a lower-cost air and missile defense.

Citat:The U.S. Army hopes to start fielding a new air defense system based around a wheeled self-propelled 155mm howitzer, which could use ammunition originally developed for an abortive U.S. Navy electromagnetic railgun, before the end of the decade. The service is pursuing the Multi-Domain Artillery Cannon (MDAC) as a way to further expand its already growing air and missile defense capabilities, especially in expeditionary scenarios and when it comes to defending against increasing cruise missile threats. The goal with MDAC is also to offer a lower-cost alternative to traditional surface-to-air missiles.

The Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) recently issued a request for information regarding plans to acquire complete MDAC prototypes.

Ово је обичан самоходни топ, са муницијом која је развијена за ЕМ топ.

Мислим да је пре покушај да се извуче још пара за пројекат него нешто смислено. Ако би да гађају КР, док окрену цевуљагу може доста да прође. За дронове мислим да је превелик.
Био би супер за високо летеће авионе и бомбардере, али мислим да је тај филм прошао.

BAE Systems ce dobiti ugovor za izradu prototipa. Hoce da imaju bateriju do kraja fiskalne 2027.

Citat:The current goal is to have a complete prototype MDAC battery on hand by the fourth quarter of Fiscal Year 2027 and then conduct an actual operational demonstration of the capability in Fiscal Year 2028.

“A full MDACS Battery consists of eight ( 8 ) Multi-Domain Artillery Cannons (MDAC), four (4) Multi-Function Precision Radars (MFPR), two (2) Multi-Domain Battle Managers (MDBM), and separately, no less than 144 Hypervelocity Projectiles (HVP),” according to the latest RCCTO contracting notice.

To strike fixed and moving ground targets in contested environments, it fires Scorpio-XR, a precision-guided munition that doubles the range of existing 155mm cannon-launched projectiles.

HPM forms the directed energy layer. Built on a high-maturity architecture with more than 99% commercial off-the-shelf components, the system removes the logistical constraints of traditional ammunition entirely. It delivers a continuous defensive capability capable of defeating drone swarms for as long as power is available, a critical advantage as adversaries field larger and more coordinated drone formations.
