Type 45 destroyers HMS Defender and HMS Diamond rendezvoused off the coast of Cyprus – where Diamond was leaving to escort the last consignment of chemical weapons from Syria for destruction and Defender stocked up supplies for her long-planned Gulf deployment.

HMS Defender left Portsmouth at the beginning of June for a six-month deployment East of Suez. Her inaugural deployment, HMS Defender will police busy shipping lanes, and take part in counter piracy operations in the Indian Ocean and Gulf region as part of the Royal Navy’s long-standing commitment to the area.

Upon her arrival off the coast of Cyprus her embarked Lynx Mark 8 helicopter, call sign Spartan, flew ashore several times to pick up vital stores, equipment and personnel.

British warships need multimillion-pound refit to stop power failures
Citat:The Royal Navy’s most advanced warships, once described as the best in the world, will need multimillion-pound repairs because of repeated power failures that leave the Type 45 destroyers unable to move or use defence and weapons systems.

The technical faults, initially described by the Ministry of Defence as a short-term problem, will require engineers to bore holes in the sides of the six £1bn warships to add new generators.

Citat: Senior defence industry officials revealed during testimony to a parliamentary inquiry on 7 June that the problems with the integrated electric propulsion (IEP) system on the Royal Navy's new Type 45 destroyers are more acute in warm environments such as the Gulf.

Rolls-Royce's Tomas Leahy claimed the Ministry of Defence (MoD) failed to specify that the Type 45s would have to operate in warm environments.
