06SP93, or prototype V7, displays to good effect the main armament of Challenger 2 – the
55-calibre long L30A1 120mm rifled gun. Above the barrel is the barbette housing of the Thermal Imaging System (TIS) that is an improved version of the one fitted to Challenger. This device provides outstanding night vision to both the commander and gunner, as well as in bad weather or through battlefield smoke.

The crew of Two One, C Squadron, SCOTS DG, grab a meal during Operation James soon after the extraordinary action they fought in support of Delta Company, 40 Commando, Royal Marines, at

Besides the three regular armoured regiments of the Royal Armoured Corps equipped with Challenger 2, the Royal Wessex Yeomanry provides reservists for Challenger 2 crewmen as circumstances demand. The employment of heavy armour in urban fighting has always been deemed an inappropriate use of such AFVs but it has become more commonplace in the recent upsurge in asymmetrical warfare. The key to success is the closest cooperation between tanks and infantry in their IFVs. Here, a Challenger 2 of The King’s Royal Hussars takes part in Exercise Lion Strike at the Copehill Down FIBUA facility and Close Quarter Battle Training Centre on Salisbury Plain in July 2014.

Challenger 2 DT22AA is the reference vehicle at the Armoured Trials and Development Unit or ATDU at the Armour Centre at Bovington in Dorset. Accordingly, it is continually modified with the latest improvements such as the loader’s Remote Weapon Station as shown here and the Mobile Camouflage System to reduce the tank’s visual and thermal image. Following experiences in Iraq with Improvised Explosive Devices, the tank is fitted with an extensive suite of Electronic Counter Measures. The combined armour array is known as Dorchester Level 2F with bar armour protecting the rear hull and turret against infantry-held RPG weapons. In this configuration the tank is designated CR2 TES or Theatre Entry Standard, with these photographs showing CR2 TES as of February 2010 by when British combat troops had withdrawn from Iraq.
