Cutaways Comparison of the Emblematic Fighters of the 50's
Reviewing the history of aviation and its development whether in the civil or military field, especially in the latter I observed how an event at a moment in history of an unexpected challenge begins the development of a whole long series of aircraft, I will focus on the event that marked a before and after... The entry into combat of the Soviet MiG-15 fighter back in 1950 over the skies of North Korea, until that moment the UN forces led by the US and supported by a resolution of the UN Security Council in the absence of the USSR that could have imposed its power of "Veto" (These were times of respect for UN resolutions) in that context were sighted with great surprise and concern A fighter unknown to many that was none other than the small (1).- MiG-15 with its wings in arrow at 35º and performance of speed, climb, maneuverability and armament that imposed fear in the forces of the UN coalition, the United States quickly decides to send its most advanced fighter the North American (2).-F-86A with its wings in arrow, quickly and thanks to veteran pilots they prevail in air-to-air combats. but this advantage is short-lived as the USSR sends instructor pilots who are soon involved in air-to-air combat against all the fighter models of the UN coalition. Leaving a kill ratio very far from the initially presented 10-1 in favor of the F-86s to become a 3/4-1 according to data revealed in the 90's but that many analysts and historians already put in context.

The consequence: The European nations were left without an aircraft that would provide an answer to that light but deadly Soviet opponent and its future successors, it is when the newly created NATO issues a requirement for a light fighter capable of facing that threat, there were many proposals, especially in France, the firms of that country presented their concepts (mostly more for domestic consumption). while in England the Hawker firm prepares a competent design the (3).-Hawker Hunter a competent fighter powered by a Rolls Royce Avon axial flow engine, is a large, complex and expensive fighter but that enjoyed the approval of the political hierarchs and heads of the RAF, it competed against other failed proposals such as the Supermarine Swiff, it is at that moment that the brilliant engineer Williams (Teddy) Petter proposed a numerical solution, a cheap and easy to produce fighter, which consumed few resources, maneuverable and well armed with two 30 mm Aden cannons, for which he built a small demonstrator in 1954 the Folland Midget powered by a small Viper engine (waiting for the more powerful Bristol Orpheus) this demonstrated exceptional performance given its poor thrust beating the speed of the sound in a slight dive, shortly after the definitive (4) is presented.-Folland Gnat already with the proposed engine, its design philosophy, compact, simple, maneuverable, economical to operate and powerful, I remember the wide publicity in the media of the time in specialized magazines.

In the end, the fighter that prevails over the French and British proposals is the model (5).-Fiat G-91Y "Gina" designed by the prestigious engineer Giuseppe Fabrielli, a fighter inspired by the F-86K (which was produced under license at Fiat) but powered by the Orpheus engine (also powered by the Breguet Taon proposal), the G-91 was armed with 4 x 12.7 mm machine guns or 2 x 20 mm cannons. It beat the French Breguet Taon, Dassault Etendart II and the British Folland Gnat, however NATO did not acquire the G-91 and only Germany and Italy acquired it, later Portugal acquired used units that saw action in the African continent during the Angolan war of independence. The point I want to make is that although it lost in its own country of origin, India soon saw in that small fighter potential to take over an aeronautical industry, for which they first acquired a small number from Folland, then they received complete kits and later production began under license in India from the HAL firm. A few years later he went into action against Pakistan in the two border conflicts, the 1964 and 1971 ones, where he earned the nickname "Sabres Killer" for his combat record, demonstrating the concept initially proposed by his designer Williams "Teddy" Petter. It served as the basis for the later development of HAL el Ajeet. Motocar
