New Finn, Danish Leaders To Decide Future Fighters

Finland's center-right government took office on May 29 and is expected to provisionally examine aircraft replacement options by the end of June, while assessing the pros and cons of candidate aircraft based on expert reports in August and September.
Citat:[The cost of replacing F/A-18C Hornets is estimated at about $6 billion. When core systems are added, the cost rises to around $8 billion. The Finnish government, depending on how the new administration prioritizes the fighter replacement, could potentially accelerate and conclude the decision-making and selection process in 2017-18.
Other candidate aircraft include the French Dassault Rafale, the F-35 Lightning II, the F/A-18E Super Hornet and the Eurofighter Typhoon. No Russian aircraft are being considered.

Working Group Proposes Multi-Role Fighters to Replace F/A-18 Aircraft

Citat:The project to replace F/A-18 fighters will extend approximately over 15 years. According to the report of the working group, the project needs to be launched in autumn 2015 at the latest. Project-related information requests should be made and, ultimately, invitations for tenders sent during the current parliamentary term.
The procurement decision should be made at the beginning of 2020s.
The working group submitted its report to the Minister of Defence on 11 June 2015.

Citat:The significant cost of the project will require the government to persuade the national parliament that the capital investment is not only required to ensure Finland's long-term defense credibility, but can stimulate economic recovery, said Ilkka Kanerva of the National Coalition Party, and chairman of the parliamentary Defense Committee.
"This is a huge capital investment, but the general cross-party view is that Finland needs this project to strengthen our defense capability and the credibility of our armed forces. The funding element of this program needs to be discussed in a calm and rational way when it reaches parliament. This may not be easy in the current difficult economic climate," Kanerva said.

The Air Force is scheduled to retire the last of its current stock of 62 Hornets by 2030.
"A formal decision to proceed with the procurement project will be taken later in 2015. It is the government's intention to follow the report's recommendations," Niinisto said.
