They were abaout to depart to their homeland, which in the meantime became a communist, where Royal insignia were deadly sign and sinn. Therefore they removed all royal insignia. More to the story, amongst Serbian officers in OFLAGs were some agitating for the communist cause, and they were deeply devided between themselves. If you look at pictures of Serbian officers POWs, you can notice that absence of insignia is more visible during the course of the war.

I think so too. But you can see that these insignia buried with all due respect. It was important to them - because of the emblem on the national colors. That is why I ask if maybe somewhere in the books describe such situations?

Ex royal officers were personae non grata after ww2, although apx 50% of them were incorporated in JNA afterwards, although with no career opportunities, promotions etc. Only one book was written about them, in early 1990s. The way they buried their insignia looks logical, at least for the group that did not change their principles but simply was afraid for their own life after getting back home.
