The system, provided by the U.S., underwent rigorous testing, evaluation, and operational validation before the operational fielding.
"The integration of this system contributes to strengthening Romanian Armed Forces' capabilities in detecting and countering threats generated by unmanned aerial systems, complementing measures already implemented to protect national airspace", the Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.
Merops is a counter-drone system developed by Project Eagle (now called Perennial Autonomy), a venture of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. The AI-enabled system consists of a ground station, launch platforms and the Surveyor interceptor drone and is designed to detect, track, and neutralize small low-altitude aerial targets.
