Citat:German Air Force (Luftwaffe) is set to conduct the first live firing trials of its new IRIS-T SLM air defense system.


The trials will be conducted by the Air Defense Missile Group 61 at the NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI) on the island of Crete, Greece in October this year. The final preparations for the trials, including Pre-Tactical Firings (PreTacs), are currently taking place in Todendorf on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein.
The new system will be certified for deployment, including within NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), on the successful completion of the trials.
IRIS-T SLM is a medium-range air defense system developed by German company, Diehl Defence. The system can engage hostile aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones at ranges of up to 40 km and altitudes of up to 20 km. It has a claimed interception rate of over 95 percent.

A complete IRIS-T SLM air defense system consists of a fire control center, radar, and several launchers, each equipped with up to eight guided missiles. The system is complemented by a reloader vehicle , which uses a crane to replace empty launcher canisters with fresh ones, as well as additional maintenance and command vehicles.
