Sanctioned Cuban military group cedes key assets: Sources
Citat:Cuba’s sanctioned military conglomerate GAESA, which controls much of the island’s economy, has spun off its port management business seeking to unlock stalled foreign supplies, several industry sources told AFP Friday.
GAESA was the main target of sweeping sanctions announced by US President Donald Trump on May 1 targeting the country’s energy, defense, mining, security and financial services sectors – all dominated by the sprawling group.
The sanctions also punish foreign companies and shipping companies that work with GAESA, causing an exodus of investors in the midst of a crippling US fuel blockade against the communist-ruled island.
AFP learned that Terminal de Contenedores Mariel SA, which is part of GAESA’s logistics arm and operates Cuba’s biggest commercial port, Mariel, sold its assets to a company run by the transport ministry.
