Lockheed pushing $1 billion Mach 6 airbreather

Citat:Lockheed Martin’s unmanned SR-72 aircraft concept has surfaced again with renewed vigour, with company leadership now pushing a reusable, air-breathing hypersonic vehicle as an “affordable” way to validate a new propulsion concept for achieving speeds within the atmosphere between Mach 6.0 to Mach 20.
Citat:
Hewson, while displaying an artist’s rendering of the SR-72, said it would cost “less than $1 billion” to develop and fly a demonstrator aircraft the size of an F-22 Raptor.

Devised by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division, SR-72 employs a turbine-based combined cycle propulsion system to get above "Mach 1.5 to 2.0," at which point it would begin converting to a supersonic combustion ramjet for speeds beyond Mach 6.

U clanku o TR-X se spominje i SR-72 [Link mogu videti samo ulogovani korisnici]

Citat:TR-X joins Northrop’s secretive RQ-180 program and Lockheed’s hypersonic SR-72, the proposed successor to the high-speed SR-71, as possible ways to meet the Air Force’s need for a penetrating ISR platform. Rather than one solution, the service likely has multiple requirements and is exploring several complementary options to counter the evolving threat, says Rebecca Grant, president of IRIS Independent Research.

The main advantages of the Mach 6 SR-72 are its speed and survivability. The notional aircraft will be able to penetrate areas where even stealthy, advanced subsonic or supersonic platforms might be vulnerable, quickly find elusive mobile targets before they can hide, then rapidly return within range of the home network to transmit its intelligence.

In the future, the Air Force may have a need for both a stealthy, high-flying TR-X and a hypersonic SR-72, says Grant. TR-X could act as its constant eye-in-the-sky, watching for changes in an environment, much as the U-2 does now, she posits. Then, once a change is detected or intelligence points to a specific threat, the SR-72 could be rapidly deployed to capture immediate data.

Skunk Works Hints At SR-72 Demonstrator Progress

Citat:However, Weiss hints that work on a combined cycle propulsion system and other key advances needed for a viable hypersonic vehicle are reaching readiness levels sufficient for incorporation into some form of demonstrator. Following critical ground demonstrator tests from 2013 through 2017, Lockheed Martin is believed to be on track to begin development of an optionally piloted flight research vehicle (FRV) starting as early as next year. The FRV is expected to be around the same size as an F-22 and powered by a full-scale, combined cycle engine.

While no specific details have been revealed, it is known that Lockheed Martin and Aerojet Rocketdyne have been teamed since 2006 on work to integrate an off-the-shelf turbine with a scramjet to power an aircraft with a combined cycle propulsion system from standstill to Mach 6 plus. The development built on work begun earlier under the Air Force/Darpa HTV-3X reusable hypersonic demonstrator, which was cancelled in 2008 but went a step further to integrate a high-speed turbine engine. The HTV-3X concept was an outgrowth of Darpa’s Falcon program, which included development of small launch vehicles, common aero vehicles and a hypersonic cruise vehicle.

“The combined cycle work is still occurring and obviously a big breakthrough in the air-breathing side of hypersonics is the propulsion system,” Weiss adds. “So this is not just on combined cycle but on other elements of propulsion system.”
The technology of the “air breather has been matured and work is continuing on those capabilities to demonstrate that they are ready to go and be fielded,” he adds.

Depending on progress with the FTV, which would fly in the early 2020s, Lockheed Martin has previously said the follow-on step would be development of a full-scale, twin-engine SR-72. Built to roughly the same proportions as the SR-71, the larger vehicle would enter flight test in the late 2020s.

Navodno vidjen nekakav demonstrator

Amid SR-72 Rumors, Skunk Works Ramps Up Hypersonics

Citat:FORT WORTH, Texas—Lockheed Martin is ramping up development of hypersonic system technology as observers report the first sightings of a demonstrator vehicle believed to be linked to the Skunk Works’ planned SR-72 high-speed aircraft project.

“Although I can’t go into specifics, let us just say the Skunk Works team in Palmdale, California, is doubling down on our commitment to speed,” says Orlando Carvalho, executive vice president of aeronautics at Lockheed Martin, speaking at the SAE International Aerotech Congress and Exhibition here.

“Simply put, I believe the United States is on the verge of a hypersonics revolution,” he says.

Lockheed Martin May Be Closer To Completing The Hypersonic SR-72 Than We Thought

Citat:Jack O’Banion, Vice President of Strategy and Customer Requirements, Advanced Development Programs for Lockheed Martin may have just unintentionally revealed that America’s next hypersonic warplane is much farther along the development process than previously suggested.

Speaking at The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics SciTech Forum, Jack O’Banion was talking about how his company has adapted to digital disruption when he brought up the so-called SR-72, which so far is only known as a conceptual hypersonic aircraft.

A closer examination of how O’Banion refers to the SR-72 may reveal that the aircraft is no long just a concept, as pointed out by aviation reporter Stephen Trimble in a series of tweets:

O’Banion defines the SR-72 as a hypersonic aircraft capable of speeds greater than Mach 5, which has been claimed since the concept was first revealed. What’s new here, however, is in what follows (emphasis added):

Citat:Without the digital transformation, the aircraft you see there could not have been made. In fact, five years ago, it could not have been made.
