Citat:Small teams of Ivorian Air Force personnel have been quietly working through their paces at a French airbase in Charente-Maritime, on France’s Atlantic coast, in a training programme that encapsulates one of the more intriguing procurement dynamics in West African aviation: Chinese jets, German-French instruction, and a French security cooperation budget funding the gap between the two.
For several months, groups of three to six pilots from the Force Aérienne de la Côte d’Ivoire (FACI), which translates as the Air Force of Côte d’Ivoire, have been receiving instruction from Grob Aircraft France (GAF) instructors at the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry airbase, a French military airfield located near Rochefort in the Charente-Maritime department. The training combines hands-on flight time with simulator sessions and is calibrated to handle pilots of varying experience levels. According to the agreement between FACI, which operates under the command of General Alfred Koffi N’Guessan, and the French subsidiary of the German aircraft manufacturer Grob Aircraft SE, the programme is expected to run until 2027. France’s defence cooperation framework is funding the initiative.
The immediate purpose of the training is specific: to prepare Ivorian Air Force pilots for the arrival of Hongdu K-8 Karakorum jet trainer aircraft, which are contracted for delivery to Abidjan by the end of 2026.
