Freedom Experiences Two More Power Outages
http://www.aviationweek.com/Article.aspx?id=/artic.....ml&p=1
Citat:Freedom documents and other Navy sources show continuing reliability issues with diesel engine operations dating back about three years, leading some sources familiar with ship operations to wonder if the Navy should consider replacing the engines with another model.
Indeed, the Freedom and its successor ship — the LCS-3 Fort Worth have had to swap diesel engines more than once in recent years because those engines “burned out” and were overhauled, according to sources familiar with the program.
Hunt says the diesel engine history appears to warrant a review, but he adds there is not enough data to say whether a new model is needed. The problems may be rooted in something other than the engines, he says

Sources: Pentagon Backs Cutting LCS to 24 ships
http://www.defensenews.com/article/20130902/DEFREG.....S-24-ships
Citat:WASHINGTON — The office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) reportedly supports the idea of limiting total purchases of littoral combat ships to only 24, far short of the US Navy’s goal of 52 ships, sources have told Defense News.
Stopping at 24 ships would end LCS procurement with the fiscal 2015 budget.
The Navy, according to sources, is countering with proposals for higher numbers, but strongly advocates going no lower than 32 ships — a number that would continue production another one or two years.

Pentagon Cuts LCS Buy to 32 Ships
http://www.defensenews.com/article/20140115/DEFREG.....y-32-Ships
Citat:It’s believed that OSD’s initial guidance in January was to cut the program even further. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, a strident defender of the LCS program, personally argued to restore at least a portion of the future ship buy, Pentagon sources said.
One Navy source familiar with the situation declared that the decision to end LCS at 32 ships isn’t yet a done deal. “This isn’t over yet,” the source said.
Citat:A major political feature of the LCS program was that the 52 ships represented a major portion — nearly one-sixth — of the 306-ship fleet. Among other issues, the Navy is in the earliest stages of thinking about what sort of ship might be useful and affordable instead of an LCS.
It’s also not clear that any decision has been made as to how the eight ships remaining to be ordered would be structured. Current plans call for two ships per year, one from each builder, starting in 2016. Options would include four ships per year, or a down-select to only one of the LCS designs.
Polako ide nizbrdo.

LCS: The USA’s Littoral Combat Ships
http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/the-usas-new-l.....ted-01343/
Citat:USN places 4-ship, $1.383 billion FY14 order; FY15 budget submission only seems to freeze LCS at 32; What’s up with the supposed follow-on “small surface combatant” – is everything rigged in advance?; post-delivery support contracts for LCS 5-6.
Citat:March 10/14: LCS-FFG. Ever since Hagel’s late February announcement, his mention of a Small Surface Combatant/ frigate as a follow-on after LCS #32 has dominated discussion. Recall: “I’ve directed the Navy to consider a completely new design, existing ship designs, and a modified LCS.” His memo to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus specifies that “These assessments should consider survivability, performance, sustainment cost, materiel readiness, lethality and growth potential…”

Citat:Lockheed Martin will export Littoral Combat Ship
The first international sale of Lockheed Martin’s Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship could occur in less than a year, the company’s program manager said.
"There's two potential customers out there that have money budgeted for the ships,” said Joe North, Lockheed’s vice president of littoral ship systems, during a April 4 media roundtable. Interested buyers must go through the lengthy foreign military sales process, which may drag out the purchase, North said. He would not disclose the potential customers.
IHS Jane's report, Lockheed Martin, the industry lead on the US Navy's (USN's) Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme, has revealed that efforts to market an international LCS variant to potential customers in the Middle East and Southeast Asia could result in the overseas sale of as many as 14 hulls in the short term.
Speaking to reporters at a briefing on 4 April prior to the Navy League 2014 Sea-Air-Space exposition, Joe North, vice-president of littoral ships and systems for Lockheed Martin, said that one potential customer is seeking 8 vessels to fill a requirement, while another customer has a budget for 6.
