Schematic Cutaway of the Dassault M.D. 550 Delta Mystere. This is how the Dassault firm's project was initially announced in response to the requirement for a fast-climbing interceptor, capable of quickly reaching the flight altitude of Soviet bombers in the early 1950s. It was a small, lightweight, and very attractive fighter powered by two lightweight Armstrong Siddeley Viper engines with afterburner. However, it lacked the necessary thrust, and that's where the second part of the propulsion system came in: a liquid-fueled rocket engine that would allow it to achieve the performance requested in the specifications of the demanding requirement. Its enormous tail fin used the same construction technique as delta wings. Its armament was a Matra R511 air-to-air missile. My surprise was discovering that, despite being radar-guided, the fighter itself lacked that system and depended on ground control radar (something similar occurred with the Leduc 022). The design soon evolved, receiving changes in various parts: the tail fin, thinner wings, more powerful engines, a more bulbous cockpit canopy, and a slightly lengthened fuselage. In short, changes that demonstrated the need for a larger aircraft, which would lead to the Mirage IIIA and its definitive radar-equipped version, the Mirage IIIC. It's worth concluding by saying that the Delta Mystere didn't win, and the preference was for another proposal from the SNCASE firm. Motocar
