1911 – The Avro Type D, a British biplane, becomes the first seaplane to take off from British sea water.
1942 – The Japanese Imperial Navy launches an air raid on Trincomalee in Ceylon (Sri Lanka); Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Hermes and the Royal Australian Navy Destroyer HMAS Vampire are sunk off the island’s east coast.
1960 – The giant Tupolev Tu-114 Rossiya (shown), a Soviet long-range airliner, sets a world speed record for propeller-driven airplanes of 545.07 mph. It carries a 55,116-pound payload and flies around an official 3,107-mile closed circuit in the USSR.
1967 – First flight of the Boeing 737, an American single-aisle jetliner.
1983 – Death of Robert H. McIntosh, a British aviator, World War II fighter and test pilot; his flying career spanned 54 years between 1917 and 1971.
1932 - First flight of the "SSSR V-1" dirigible.
1960 - I. Sukholin and crew set eight world records aboard the Tu-114 powered by TV-12 turboprops for speed over a closed circuit of 5,000 km of 877.212 kph without payload and with payloads of 1 to 25 tonnes.

Na danasnji dan, 12. aprila, osim sto je poleteo Gagarin, desio se i "crni cetvrtak" za americku avijaciju. Naime, 1951.godine, u korejskom ratu, grupa sovjetskih MiG-15 napala je 21 americku super tvrdjavu B-29, koje su pratili lovci, njih oko 200, i oborili 12 bombardera i cetiri lovca. Napad je bio " Iz zasede", a piloti su (gle cuda) bili iz 324. lovacke divizije, kojom je tada komandovao ne nepoznati general Ivan Kozedub.
Gubici amerikanaca bi bili i veci, da avioni nisu skrenuli sa pravca i vratili se nad more, gde je sovjetima bilo zabranjeno da lete.
Inace, nad Korejom je oboreno 170 super tvrdjava, koje su do pojave sovjetskih lovaca bile "neoborive" (ili se bar tako tvrdilo)
