83 years ago today, the Junkers Ju 52 took flight for the first time. One of the most important aircraft in European aviation history, "Auntie Ju" served with numerous air carriers as an airliner and freight hauler. Derived from a single-engine aircraft, two additional radial engines were mounted on either wing to improve performance. Corrugated metal skin was used to strengthen the structure against torsion and large, fixed landing gear could cope with rough fields. The Luftwaffe employed the type as a bomber, transporter and minesweeper during World War II.

36 years ago today, the Lockheed CP-140 Aurora took flight for the first time. A special version of the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft, the CP-140 is employed by the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Aurora combines the P-3 airframe with the electronics system of the S-3 Viking. A magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) is mounted in a boom extending from the tail and is used to locate submerged vessels by detecting their magnetic presence in the water. Ten underwing hard points along with a fuselage weapons bay forward of the wing are capable of carrying almost any armament cleared for use on the P-3 including missiles, depth charges and torpedoes. Sonobuoy launching tubes are located in the lower fuselage behind the wing. The Aurora serves as Canada's only strategic Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and can also perform search and rescue missions, for which the weapons bay can be adapted to carry two survival kit—air-droppable (SKAD) units. Canada's 18 Auroras are home-ported at two locations, Canadian Forces Base Comox and Canadian Forces Base Greenwood.
