Citat:Taiwan's Air Force sidestepped speculation Tuesday that it is looking to purchase F-15 or F-18 fighter aircraft from the U.S., saying only that plans to bolster defense capabilities will depend on present combat needs and perceived future threats.

On Sunday, Taiwanese news website Up Media reported that the Air Force is planning to purchase the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet to strengthen its defense capabilities and counter China's Russia-made Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft.

The report said Taiwan and the U.S. have had preliminary discussions about the purchase, and retired models such as the F-15C/D or new models like the F-15 2040c, the F-18E/F and the F-18XT have all been mentioned.

Taiwan is currently upgrading the underground air bases at Hualien and Taitung, United Daily News reports.These bases are all located on the east side of the island’s Central Mountain Range. They were considered impervious to ballistic missile attacks from China. However, the mainland has shown that it can now launch cruise missile attacks from the eastern side of the island.
To better prepare for such attacks, the bases will improve their air conditioning, power generators, fire fighting equipment.

Taiwan’s Defense Minister says negotiations to buy the F-35 are ongoing
Citat:In an interview with Chinese-language Liberty Times, Taiwan’s Minister of National Defense Yen De-fa said the country is still negotiating with the United States to buy the F-35.
“To answer the question as to whether we have formally requested the F-35 from the US, although we have been holding dialogues with US officials, they have not reached a definitive conclusion. US officials are evaluating it, and they might have their own concerns over its high cost or other considerations.
“However, I can confirm that negotiations are ongoing.”

Taiwan begins assembly of new advanced jet trainers

Citat:Assembly of Taiwan's new advanced jet trainers (AJT) officially began Friday with a launch ceremony held at the Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. (AIDC) in Taichung.

The AIDC, known for developing the country's indigenous Ching-kuo fighter, has been commissioned by the Ministry of National Defense to design and manufacture 66 of the advanced jet trainers, with the first prototype scheduled to be rolled out in 2019 and flight testing expected to be conducted starting in June 2020.

The advanced trainers are scheduled to be delivered by 2026 and will replace the military's AT-3 trainer aircraft and F-5 fighter jets, which are over 30 years old.

If accepted by Taiwan, the package covers both the repair and replenishment of spare parts for types such as the Lockheed Martin F-16, C-130, Northrop F-5, and the AIDC IDF (Indigenous Defense Fighter), says the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
