The contracts are awarded to Bollinger Shipyards Lockport for four ASCs, valued at approx. $2.2 billion, and Finland's Rauma Marine Constructions Oy for two ASCs, valued at approx. $1.1 billion. The first vessel under this contract is scheduled to be delivered in 2028, and all six vessels are scheduled to be delivered by 2031.
The Coast Guard’s contracts with the two companies were initially awarded in December 2025, and were the first two of three ASC contracts awarded. These initial contract awards allowed shipbuilders to begin planning while all final details were negotiated.
Arctic Security Cutter (ASC) is a new class of polar icebreakers designed to conduct U.S. Coast Guard missions in the challenging maritime environment of the Arctic region. The vessels will provide the Coast Guard with a modern icebreaking fleet to support national security, maritime safety, and polar access.

Citat:Arctia has entered into a charter agreement for the operation of one multipurpose icebreaker in the Canadian Arctic later this year.

The services will be delivered in Canada through Qikiqtaaluk Horizon Arctic Services (QHAS), an Inuit-owned joint venture, with Horizon Naval Engineering acting as Arctia’s contractual counterparty.
Under the agreement, Arctia will provide maritime services supporting the Canadian Coast Guard's civilian operations, such as icebreaking, assistance, and ice management services, with its multipurpose icebreaker and offshore support vessel MSV Nordica.
Arctia Oy is Finnish state-owned company responsible for operating a Finnish icebreaker fleet.

Chantier Davie Canada has secured a $11.3 billion contract to build six program icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG)
Citat:Under the contract, all six icebreakers will be built in Canada at the Davie Shipyard in Lévis, Québec. The five-year construction phase of the first vessel will begin in 2027, with all vessels expected to be operational by 2038.
In 2019, the Government of Canada announced it would be procuring six new program icebreakers under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), as part of the CCG fleet renewal. In 2024, Chantier Davie was awarded a $19.6 million contract to begin the initial design work.
As Polar Class 3 icebreakers, the program icebreakers is being designed as modern, versatile vessels capable of carrying a wide range of missions in challenging ice conditions across Canada’s waterways. They will form the next generation of Arctic capable ships, supporting growing operational demands in the North, from search and rescue (SAR) and environmental response, to Northern resupply and Arctic science missions.
The new fleet will replace the CCG’s ageing heavy and medium icebreakers operating in Atlantic Canada, the St. Lawrence waterways and the Great Lakes during the winter, and in the Arctic during the summer.

Citat:Finnish marine propulsion specialist Steerprop has secured an order to supply complete propulsion packages for four Arctic Security Cutters (ASCs) being built by Bollinger Shipyards for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).
Each vessel will be equipped with two Steerprop SP 120 CRP ARC LM main azimuth propulsion units and two SP 25 TT ARC tunnel thrusters. Steerprop is scheduled to deliver the propulsion packages between 2027 and 2029.

The vessels is being constructed to an existing Multi-Purpose Icebreaker (MPI) design. During the selection process, Steerprop demonstrated that its dual-end propeller CRP (Contra-Rotating Propeller) concept delivered significantly higher thrust and improved efficiency compared to conventional single-propeller solutions.

Steerprop has supplied propulsion systems for one-third of the world’s icebreakers with azimuth propulsion in operation, and offers several proprietary ice-operating design features, including tunnel thrusters that do not require protective ice grids.
