Ukraine’s MAC HUB and Sky Defenders have signed a memorandum to integrate Sky Defenders UAVs into the Katran family of unmanned surface vessels (USVs).
The companies reportedly plan to integrate the UAVs into Katran platforms in the near future, although the specific drone models have not yet been disclosed. Sky Defenders develops unmanned systems and has three UAV models that have been used in combat for almost two years, alongside active contracts with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.
One of its publicly identified systems is the Zigzag-S, a catapult-launched fixed-wing strike UAV with a stated range of more than 150 km (93 miles), a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and a 3–5 kg (6.6–11 lb) warhead. Sky Defenders is also reportedly working with LAB254 on machine-learning functions for predicting target trajectories and an AI-based automatic target acquisition feature.
The Katran family reportedly has a range of more than 1,500 km (932 miles) and can carry different types of UAVs depending on configuration, including MAC Thunder strike FPV drones and MAC Dead Fly interceptor drones. The Katran X3 strike variant is reportedly designed to carry a 300-kg (661-lb) warhead.
MAC HUB has previously demonstrated the Katran X1.2 equipped with 27 MAC Dead Fly interceptor drones during trials on the Dnipro River. According to the company, Katran platforms can also use a unified control centre, AI-enabled systems, 360-degree cameras and acoustic sensors for detecting aerial targets.
