Citat:Navantia has begun the testing of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system section of Spanish Navy submarine Cosme García (S-83), at its Cartagena shipyard.
The section of S83 carrying the AIP is located in a special test facility at the Cartagena shipyard, known as IPS3, where a multidisciplinary task force has carried out all the necessary checks to begin testing. The tests will make it possible to carry out the necessary adjustments to the system before joining the 12m-long, approximately 400-tonne section to the rest of the submarine’s pressure hull.
Cosme García (S-83) is the third S-80 Plus Isaac Peral-class submarine being built for the Spanish Navy and the first to be equipped with an AIP system.
S-80's AIP system is based on a bioethanol-processor consisting of a reaction chamber and several intermediate Coprox reactors. The system transforms the bioethanol (BioEtOH) into high purity hydrogen which feeds a series of fuel cells. AIP will give the submarines the ability to operate submerged for weeks rather than days thereby enhancing their stealth and deterrence capability.
Navantia’s S-80 programme involves the construction of four next-generation submarines for the Spanish Navy. Second of the class, Narciso Monturiol (S-82) is currently undergoing harbour trials and the next two units, Cosme García (S-83) and Mateo García de los Reyes (S-84), are under construction at the Cartagena shipyard.
