The fighting erupted ahead of planned anti-government protests over Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s decision to remain in office after the opposition said his constitutional term expired in mid-May.The dispute intensified after controversial constitutional amendments were approved earlier this year, extending presidential and parliamentary terms from four to five years and replacing the indirect electoral model with direct elections.Opposition leaders, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, reject those changes, arguing they were adopted without proper consultation and undermine Somalia’s fragile federal system.
According to residents quoted by Reuters, fighting began on Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday morning across parts of Mogadishu.
Heavy gunfire and explosions forced families to flee their homes as streets emptied.
Clashes were reported around the Howlwadaag and Abdiasis districts in Mogadishu, where government troops and armed opposition supporters exchanged fire.
Witnesses said several buildings were damaged, while the full casualty toll remains unclear.
