Israel’s F-35I fuel tank programme revives stealth versus range debate
Citat:Israel is moving ahead with plans to equip its F-35I Adir stealth fighters with external fuel tanks, reopening a long-running debate in combat aviation over how fifth-generation fighters balance stealth with the need for greater range.

The Israeli Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth more than $34 million with Cyclone, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, to develop and integrate an extended-range capability for the Lockheed Martin-built F-35I.

The new tanks will be based on an existing Cyclone design originally developed for the F-16.

Officials said the upgrade is intended to extend the aircraft’s operational range, reduce dependence on aerial refuelling and improve operational flexibility during long-range strike missions.

Citat:The initial tranche of 48 F-35Bs has now all been handed over to the UK. With ZM152 lost overboard from HMS Queen Elizabeth in November 2021, the UK inventory officially stands at 47, although many of those jets are not available for operations. Three jets from the final (lot 17) arrived at RAF Marham in late April (ZM180, ZM181 and ZM182). Two further aircraft (ZM177 and ZM179) did not complete their delivery voyage after suffering some kind of malfunction. On 9th March, they landed at Lajes International Airport on the Azores and have been stuck there ever since. Like the jet that got stranded in India in 2025, they likely need assistance from Lockheed Martin Engineers before resuming the flight.

The UK Lightning Force also remains constrained by delays to the long-running Block 4 upgrade programme. The F-35B still lacks integration of the Meteor beyond-visual-range missile and SPEAR-3 precision strike weapon, leaving British aircraft dependent on AMRAAM and free-fall bombs for all operational tasks.

Both weapon integrations rely on the troubled Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) hardware and software package. The annual report from the US DOTE published earlier this year stated that no combat-capable TR-3 aircraft had been delivered during fiscal year 2025 because of persistent software stability problems. The last 13 aircraft delivered to the UK possess the TR-3 hardware. It is unclear to what extent this restricts operational capability, but these jets are probably limited to training, pending the combat-capable release of new software, not expected before 2027.
