На једном руском сајту сам прочитао да је Ф-4 настао као палубни пресретач, намијењен за одбрану носача авиона од напада совјетских бомбардера, наоружаних противбродским ракетама. За то су морали да имају велики домет, вријеме остајања у ваздуху, добар радар и велику брзину. Заслугом тадашњег министра (секретара како амери кажу) одбране Роберта Макнамаре, великог поборника унификације, улазе и у наоружање РВ и постају универзални авиони. Те да никада није био добар ловац за освајање превласти у ВаП-у, али је био добар пресретач, ловац-бомбардер и извиђач. За борбу са ловцима није ни конструисан, али је нечијом политичком одлуком добио и ту улогу.

At this time, Sparrow missiles were in the development phase, and the airplane was configured to carry four, semi submerged in the bottom of the fuselage. This was the first such installation of missiles in a fighter. More powerful General Electric J-79 were substituted for the earlier J65, with corresponding changes in the duct area. Other features would make the airplane the Navy's first Mach 2-plus carrier-based aircraft. During this period, the Navy was undecided on a single or double place aircraft, but McDonnell prepared configurations of both and the US Navy selected the two-place version.

posto su jos uvek u sluzbi i F4 i MIG-21 dokazuje njihov kvalitet/naravno oba su x puta modifikovani/ali JOS UVEK LETE! sto nemoze puno aviona da priusti.
