The deployment is at the request of the French authorities within the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The fires in southwestern France have now consumed more than 40,000 hectares of land. More than 200,000 people have already been evacuated, while the fire is drawing closer to the major city of Bordeaux.

Citat:Australia is sending aerial firefighting assets and teams to support the response to devastating wildfires in France.
The mission will involve the deployment of a CH-47D Chinook helicopter and a Bell 412 reconnaissance and support aircraft, operated by the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS). The aircraft will be transported to France in partnership with the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
The aerial assets will be accompanied by 24 highly skilled aerial and ground crew from the NSW Rural Fire Service.
The Chinook, which is equipped with an 11,300-litre water tank, will support around-the-clock firefighting operations, providing much-needed relief to emergency services responding on the ground.
The assistance is being provided in response to a request from the French Government. It will be delivered in close partnership with the Australian Defence Force, which will support the rapid deployment of personnel, aircraft and equipment through strategic airlift and logistics.
According to a joint statement released by Australian Ministers, the deployment will take place in coming days.
