The film was produced during Second Sino-Japanese War, before the Pearl Harbor Attack in 1941. The film mainly concerns the training of newly-recruited pilots and their daily life, then their subsequent fighting experiences in China. Army supported the production, providing all the authentic airplanes, training and actual actions. They even provided the older biplanes disguised as Chinese fighter planes. Obinata plays the trainer-turned-combat-leader, who is passionate and cool at the same time. All his boys love him, of course. The film is not as intense, full of sugar-coated camaraderie, until young pilots are killed in action one by one. Last twenty minutes are fairly grim, as the message of self-sacrifice is heard loud and clear.

Air force film Nippon’s Wild Eagles (Nippons wilde Adler, 1942), a film about the training of young pilots and their sorties in China. A German advisor supported the production of this film, and it was commissioned and in part financed by the Japanese military who dedicated it to Adolf Hitler and the German people. During its solemn premiere in Berlin on 5 June 1942, the Japanese ambassador and many representatives from the Nazi and Wehrmacht elite were present. The Filmkurier called the film an ‘epic song of the Japanese pilots’ spirit’ and characterises it by two quotes from the film itself: ‘Your life does not belong to you, it belongs to Nippon’ and ‘For us, to die decently means the same as to live decently.’ Even though film magazines like Filmkurier and Lichtbildbühne regularly ran articles on the situation of the Japanese film industry, on Japanese films shown in Tokyo, or on how German films fared in Japan, Japanese films remained more or less unknown in the Reich.

Ја бих био срећнији да су код нас у Чизмашима узели Т-55 да глуми немачки тенк него М-84.

Vise verujem da to ima veze sa zavrsetkom obnove mosta koja je okoncana iste godine kada je i film snimljen.

Само да јавим (и да дођем себи): филм ''Марш на Дрину'' коначно је добио правог наследника. Филм ''Заспанка за војнике'' треба приказивати у школама, на факултетима, поново на школама...и, наравно, на свим филмским академијама.
Сутра следи приказ, када се мало охладим.
