Diehl expected to finalise LaGS development in 2016
Citat:A Diehl BGT official told IHS Jane's that the company has now completed a series of successful captive carry tests of LaGS on a Panavia Tornado IDS to demonstrate the SAL lock-on capability, but to date has not conducted any live firing trials. These could now slip to late 2016 or to 2017.
A company-funded development, LaGS provides for an innovative re-role of the AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missile (AAM) as a precision air-to-surface system. The LaGS solution replaces the AIM-9L's infrared (IR) seeker with a new semi-active laser seeker and a new sapphire dome, both developed by Diehl. The rest of the missile - including the WDU-17/B 9.5-kg annular blast/fragmentation continuous rod warhead, solid-propellant rocket motor, fins, and actuators - remains the same. The LaGS retains the DSU-15A/B Active Optical Target Detector laser proximity fuze, which will be de-activated for detonation on impact.
This adaptation is delivered through a modified forward guidance and control unit (GCU), which is form-and-fit identical to the standard Sidewinder, thus mitigating acquisition and integration costs. Accordingly, LaGS can be carried on all platforms and weapon stations cleared for AIM-9L series weapons.
Diehl is marketing LaGS as a day/night precision capability for close air support/urban close air support operations in a time-sensitive targeting environment.
