The handover ceremony and Self-Defense Force ensign presentation ceremony for the vessel was conducted at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' (MHI) Nagasaki Shipyard. JS Nagara will be deployed to Kure Naval Base as part of the JMSDF's 2nd Patrol Squadron.
Nagara was laid down at MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard on July 6, 2023. The vessel was christened and launched on December 19, 2024.

Citat:Japan has successfully conducted its first-ever live launch of a U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missile from the JS Chokai, an Aegis-equipped destroyer fitted with Mk 41 vertical launch systems. The exact Tomahawk variant used was not disclosed.

With this launch, Japan became the third country, after Australia and the Netherlands, to fire a Tomahawk missile from a surface warship outside the U.S. Navy.
Japan plans to acquire up to 400 Tomahawk missiles, 200 Block IV and 200 Block V variants, for an estimated $1.03 billion.
By the end of the current program, five of Japan's eight Aegis destroyers are expected to be capable of launching Tomahawk missiles: JS Chokai, JS Kirishima, JS Haguro, JS Myoko, and JS Atago.
