A Russian soldier has been killed in a shootout with anti-terrorist forces after he reportedly suffered a nervous breakdown and opened fire at fellow troops during target practice on a military firing range in Russia’s Far East, killing three, wounding two and then fleeing the training ground.
“As a result of a search operation, a counter-terror division from the Eastern Military District garrison found and stopped an armed serviceman who had fled a training ground in the Amur region,” the military district’s press office said, with RT reporting.
The soldier put up resistance that was assessed as a direct threat to the lives of counter-terror officers, prompting them to open fire on him. “The serviceman offered armed resistance and was lethally wounded,” the statement read according to a Sputnik report. A special commission has been sent to the scene by the Russian Defense Ministry to investigate.
The suspect fired his assault rifle at a group of soldiers “waiting to leave the firing line,” the Investigative Committee said, with RFE reporting.
Belogorsk authorities, where the shooting range is located, identified the suspect as Gasan Abdulakhadov, a 23-year-old native of Russia’s Daghestan region in the North Caucasus.
The Belogorsk mayor’s office said Abdulakhadov had joined the unit on September 21 according to the RFE report.
