Lockheed Martin Awarded $158.5 Million Upgrade Contract for Germany P-3C Orion Aircraft

Parliament is currently weighing revisions to the foundational law of the Ministry of Defense that would allow equipment to be given to other nations at no cost. Currently, some form of compensation is legally required for any national asset. Malaysia will likely be the first beneficiary once that change is made, receiving P-3C patrol aircraft previously used by the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

RMAF to set up team to evaluate maritime patrol aircraft - RMAF Chief
Citat:Kulau Lumpur recently approved the purchase of four aircraft in the 2018 budget.
“Besides the aircraft’s capabilities, the team will evaluate other functions of the aircraft, including its supportive aspect and whether it (the aircraft) could collaborate with our local industry. We need to look holistically on its long-term benefits,” Affendi was quoted as saying.
The Royal Malaysian Navy will assign an officer to the team as well as the new aircraft will come with anti-submarine warfare capability.
He added that another team is evaluating the P-3 from Japan. Tokyo had offered to transfer their aircraft free to Malaysia. Affendi said the P-3s are not part of the evaluation and more of a stop-gap measure.

During the training 14 bombs, each weighing 500 pounds, were dropped on the range, at the north-west end of South Head on Kaipara Harbour, from a P-3K2 Orion aircraft. They had been prepared and loaded on to the aircraft by RNZAF armourers at Base Ohakea in Manawatu.
