80 назад состоялась первая попытка "разогнать" тяжелый танк КВ. 30 января 1942 года Сталин подписал постановление ГКО №1220сс "О повышении динамики танков КВ". Согласно ему, предполагалось форсировать мотор В-2К до 650 лошадиных сил. Причиной таких мер стало то, что зимой 1941-42 годов выявилась недостаточная динамика танка в ходе преодоления снега. В отличие от Т-34, который, как неоднократно говорил Сталин, "как ласточка летает", КВ-1 шел по снегу куда медленнее. Этому способствовал и существенный рост массы - до 50 тонн. К 18 февраля 1942 года было подготовлено два танка КВ-1. На танке №6728 установили ведущие колеса, где число зубьев венца снизили с 16 до 14, также изменили передаточные числа бортовых передач. Впрочем, полным набором изменений снабдили другой танк, с серийным номером 10033. Он получил мотор В-2КФ с пневматическим регулятором Настенко, мощность выросла до 650 лошадиных сил. В первом же пробеге температура масла достигла 125 градусов. Можно представить, что было бы летом. Мотор В-2КФ проработал всего 20 моточасов. Попытка исправить ситуацию путем замены радиаторов и других правок системы охлаждения результатов не принесли. На повторном пробеге перегрев повторился, поэтому 20 февраля мотор с танка сняли. Дальнейшие работы особого улучшения не дали, поэтому позже пошли по новому пути - облегчению КВ-1 и замене коробки передач. Так летом 1942 года появился КВ-1с.

An important step in Soviet tank building was taken on February 9th, 1942. Deputy People's Commissar of Tank Production and chief designer at the Kirov Factory in Chelyabinsk Zhosef Kotin petitioned his superior, People's Commissar of Tank Production Vyachelsav Malyshev, to split ChKZ into two. The main factory would continue mass production and modernization of existing designs. Radically new and experimental developments would continue at a new spin-off factory, which would not be burdened with mass production and would thus be able to perform experimental work faster.

His request was granted in March of 1942 with the creation of experimental factory #100. Over the course of the Great Patriotic War, factory #100 was responsible for the development and improvement of a whole slew of armoured vehicles, most notably the IS series of heavy tanks and ISU SPGs on their chassis. In 1949 the factory was reclassified into All-Union Scientific Research Institute #100 (VNII-100). The institute ceased to exist only in 2007 when it was merged with Uralvagonzavod.

Obsession with superheavy tanks is often a stereotypically German trait, but the USSR suffered from the same not once, but twice. In early 1941, rumours of new German superheavy tanks forced the development of the 70 ton KV-3 and the even heavier KV-4 and KV-5. The start of the war put an end to such plans, if only because no German superheavy tank ever showed up.

The desire for a superheavy tank emerged once more after seeing the Tiger, Panther, and Ferdinand appear in 1943. The Object 701 design was drafted by the end of the year, which grew into the 60 ton IS-4. This was not the end, as the discovery of the Maus tank in 1945 prompted an even heavier vehicle: the 68 ton IS-7.

Thunder struck on February 18th, 1949, as the Council of Ministers deemed these superheavy tanks impractical. Development and production of any tank heavier than 50 tons was cancelled. All that was allowed was the modernization of the existing IS-4 tanks and development of a new 50 ton heavy tank that was closer to the IS-3 concept than any post-war tank.

The resulting tank was called IS-5, then renamed to IS-8, then to T-10. The T-10 tank entered production in 1954, and the family of tanks remained in production until 1966. This was the USSR's most numerous post-war heavy tank, but also the last. The emerging Main Battle Tank concept made heavy tanks obsolete.

The T-44 wasn't the only new Soviet tank in development in early 1944. On February 19th People's Commissar of Tank Production Malyshev signed an order to develop a new variant of the T-34-85 tank with 75 mm thick front hull and 90 mm thick front turret armour. Two variants of the tank called T-34-85M were developed. One was similar to the existing T-34-85 with thicker front armour and thinner armour in other places, as a result of which the total weight actually decreased. The second variant had a rearranged hull with fuel tanks in the rear instead of between the suspension spring wells along the sides of the tank.

Trials showed that mobility of the uparmoured variant was the same as that of the production tank. Unfortunately, penetration trials with the 75 mm Kwk 42 and 88 mm Pak 43 showed that the reduction in maximum penetration distance was not enough to warrant putting a new tank into production. The change to the turret was still considered worth it, and so the T-34-85M project partially paid off. A T-34-85 turret with 90 mm thick front armour went into production in 1944.
