Veteran pilots of the type will recognise some of the switches along the left-hand cockpit wall, with the adjacent control column unchanged. However, the dedicated digital station on the right features off-the-shelf hardware, including a large area touchscreen display through which students can react in real time with virtual entities, targets and weapons via ITPS-developed software. “How that is integrated into the ITPS syllabus is basically on the systems side,” explained Head of Training, Thiago Macedo.

After completing initial core modules considering cockpit assessment, performance and flying qualities, students on the six month to year-long Category 1 and 2 courses are also able to assess the Hunter’s inherent flying characteristics – which remain unchanged by its fifth-generation representative avionics. However, flying helmets here are not fitted with the proverbial rose-tinted lenses that the author has routinely come to view this vintage beauty through.

The aerodynamic adage “if it looks right, it flies right” may often be said of the Hunter, but students here must still extensively evaluate what Macedo described as the platform’s “interesting old-fashioned characteristics.” This includes a hydraulic flight control system affecting the longitudinal and lateral axis, but not the rudder, impacting how free play of the controls is felt. Quirks, such as these, stressed Macedo, represent additional learning opportunities to further hone the students’ evaluation skills.

Although the UK’s Empire Test Pilot School (which operated Hunters until 2001) was the only course to routinely spin a swept-wing aircraft, this is not a necessary part of the syllabus 5STA delivers. Neither do students dive the transonic aircraft through the sound barrier, a stunt performed by the British manufacturers’ test pilots who – back in the day – would engage in a little jovial rivalry by aiming sonic booms towards their rivals’ headquarters. Supersonic flight is prohibited in the airspace around Ontario, although according to Clementi: “the usefulness of the aircraft comes from the handling performance, not the dash speed.”

As with any ageing aircraft, ongoing maintenance capabilities, parts procurement and airworthiness challenges can all too often prove prohibitive. Fortunately, ITPS purchased a large number of serviceable spares alongside its Hunter, augmented by a donor airframe. The original bladder fuel tanks contained in the wings – installed in 1956 and previously inspected in the 1980s – were replaced by remanufactured components engineered from original blueprints. Four spare Rolls-Royce Avon 100 series engines (which cannot be overhauled) currently support around 100 flying hours a year. Interestingly, despite retaining its original Martin-Baker Mk.4 ejection seats, the only thing missing in this cockpit is that 1950s’ smell so unique and synonymous to jets of the era.
