Citat:Lockheed's famed Skunk Works advanced projects division has posted a cryptic planform drawing of an aircraft on Instagram. The post appears directly related to its 80th anniversary publicity push and its constant teasing that there is much they can't show us... just yet. This is hardly a surprise for an institution that helped mold the deeply classified weapons development ecosystem that exists today.

The aircraft in question appears to be a Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD)-like manned tactical aircraft design or at least somehow related to it. We know that at least one NGAD demonstrator has been flying for years and that as many as three demonstrators have since been in testing. There are major indications that there has been a down-select and just two companies fighting are fighting for the opportunity to build the manned NGAD aircraft. It will sit as the centerpiece of the NGAD 'family of systems,' which includes new weapons, sensors, networking architecture, engine technology, and above all else, a host of highly autonomous unmanned aircraft, including Collaborative Combat Aircraft or CCAs.

NGAD plus dron koji ce leteti uz njega.

USAF Plans $28.48 Billion over 5 Years to Develop New Advanced Fighters, Drone Escorts

Citat:The Air Force plans to dramatically ramp up spending on the Next Generation Air Dominance fighter program in the coming years, to the tune of $28.48 billion fiscal 2025-29, according to newly released budget documents. That figure includes the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, which will produce uncrewed, semi-autonomous “escort” aircraft to fly alongside NGAD.

Zna se od ranije da ce biti velik. Zanimljivo je i to da x program ima umanjeni prototip ili vise njih koji leti jos od 2020. a da nista nije primeceno.

Koncept lakog lovca.

Citat:A Light Fighter that is ‘built to adapt’

In his presentation for the keynote address, Allvin revealed an F-35-like notional design. This was while he advocated for switching from the paradigm of “built to last” of the Cold War and post-Cold War era to “built to adapt.” He said that the “underlying assumption” was that systems that were built to last would be “relevant” for the future, implying it might not be the case in many aerospace platforms today.

“That proposition can become an albatross. It’s still functioning but it’s not as effective,” Allvin said. “The United States Air Force has a large majority of its systems designed and developed with this value proposition.” Stressing on why adaptability should be placed ahead of durability or ruggedness, he then revealed the picture of the concept jet.

Allvin was implying the use of ‘open systems architecture’, modular design, ‘digital engineering’ and ‘3D-printing/additive manufacturing’ that are adopted for engineering many of the advanced platforms like the B-21 Raider or the Mako air-launched hypersonic missile. They allow for quick upgrades, replacement of parts or swapping out components based on mission needs. This makes repairs easier, maintenance cheaper, allowing for longer technological relevance and greater operational availability during downtimes.

He said the service had envisaged a decade ago a “Future Operating Concept” revolving around “operational agility”, but it is not clear if the rendering in the presentation is linked to this concept. Most likely, it is plainly an unofficial visualization of a mass producible fighter with stealth capabilities, merely derived from the F-35, that Allvin or the U.S.A.F leadership broadly has in mind.

This jet largely has the same wing and V-tail configuration as the F-35, except for the air intakes that are angled backwards, whereas on the Lightning II they are swept forward. Similar to the F-35, the notional design is based around a single engine, while the NGAD fighter has always been represented as a twin-engine design.

‘Light Fighter’ Concept Emerges During US Air Force Chief’s Speech at Royal Aeronautical Society Amid NGAD’s Uncertain Future

Citat:
“On the sidelines of the conference, this debate about uncrewed systems also fed into thoughts about the shock decision by the US to back away from its NGAD (Next Generation Air Dominance) fighter as a F-22 replacement – with the latest news that it will be pausing this programme to more thoroughly evaluate the options and potentially rescope. At least one senior defence industry executive, no doubt with insight into the programme and classified US R&D projects, admitted they too were baffled by the decision, with other comments from attendees being ‘something has changed’.”

The NGAD Fighter Could Be Redesigned to Cost Less Than the F-35
One of the goals appears to be the mass, as the Air Force is looking to have a larger fleet of cheaper aircraft, rather than a small fleet of very expensive ones. “The more the airplane costs, the fewer you’re going to have. Numbers do matter,” noted Kendall.

According to the official comments, the Air Force will take advantage of the NGAD pause to go back to the origins of NGAD and reassess the requirements and how they can be met efficiently.

Mornarica bi uskoro trebalo da odluci kojoj kompaniji ce dati ugovor za njihov F/A-XX.
Citat:
The Navy expects to award a contract for its next-generation, carrier-based fighter and expects the long-range attack jet to enter service in the 2030s, its top officer said Oct. 2.

“We expect that sixth-generation platform to be able to have advanced sensors, advanced lethality, advanced range, and being able to integrate with manned and unmanned capabilities together,” said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti. “That’s one of the things, as we learn from the Air Force and the work they’re doing, to integrate that with what we know that we need to be able to do.”

The Navy will soon decide between competitors Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. “We have three companies that have provided proposals for that and we’re actually in source selection right now,” Franchetti told reporters at a Defense Writers Group event.

Franchetti’s commitment to the program, referred to as F/A-XX for now, comes as the Air Force is reevaluating its future combat jet, the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) aircraft, with a rapid analysis over the course of the next three months.

Air Force leaders have indicated they would prefer a less-costly option. But making NGAD less expensive would likely mean sacrificing range and payload, which could mean opting for a single engine rather than two. Shorter range is also only possible if the Air Force also fields a stealthy Next-Generation Air-refueling System (NGAS), the Air Force’s hoped-for future tanker concept.

The Navy’s F/A-XX is meant to replace its F/A-18 Super Hornet multi-role fighters and E/A-18 Growler electronic warfare attack aircraft. It is planned to deliver greater range and possess more sensing and electronic warfare capabilities than the service’s F-35C fifth-generation fighters.

The Navy is not without budget challenges of its own, however. Earlier this year it delayed roughly $1 billion in investments for F/A-XX to focus on near-term readiness—and Congress may cut the F/A-XX budget even more. But Franchetti’s comments indicate a new crewed fighter is still a Navy priority at the very moment when the outlook for the Air Force’s next-generation fighter appears to be in limbo.
