The Air Force of the Future: Lasers on Fighter Jets, Planes That Think
[Link mogu videti samo ulogovani korisnici]
Citat:In just five years, the Air Force will fire a high-powered laser from a fighter jet, the culmination of years of development of "Star Wars" technology.
The Air Force has not yet settled on a platform to host the laser, although the team is considering the legacy F-15, Bagnell said. AFRL will also look at the F-22 and F-16 as possible host platforms, and even the F-35 joint strike fighter, he said. The Air Force Research Laboratory’s “Shield” effort, sponsored by Air Combat Command, aims to demonstrate a high-energy laser on a tactical aircraft in 2021, according to Shield's program manager, Richard Bagnell.
The team has been working since February 2015 to take advantage of the latest developments in solid-state laser technology, Bagnell said. Engineers combine many smaller lasers, similar to ones found in a Blue Ray machine, into an effective high-power beam with over 10 kilowatts of power, he said.
Citat:The team recently flew a manned F-16 in formation with a “surrogate” F-16 UAV — in other words, the surrogate has a pilot sitting in the cockpit to take over if something goes wrong, but the algorithms fly the plane. During this exercise, the manned and surrogate F-16s flew in formation together until the pilot in the manned plane directed the surrogate to execute a separate mission. The surrogate F-16 completed the mission and then rejoined the formation, Kearns said.
But Kearns wants to go beyond an automated fighter jet. AFRL is planning an exercise in 2022 that will demonstrate the technology is not just automated, but autonomous — that it can navigate, adapt to unexpected weather and easily change its flight path without direction from an operator.
"What we'd like to show is that the system can fly around, navigate, it can adapt to things in the environment. If weather pops up it knows how to adapt its flight path for weather," Kearns said. "We might [see these] as trivial kind of responses, but they are still critical for a platform to be able to do on its own and show that it can do them well."

Verovatno pojedini će moći i leteti hipersoničnim brzinama.
Lovac F/A-XX će posedovati moćno lasersko i elektromagnetno oružje i hipersonične rakete.
Nova generacija aviona će biti integrisana u sve sisteme komandovanja, javljanja i obavešavanja, upravljanja i borbenog dejstva u trodimenzionalnom ukupnom prostoru: kopno, vazduh, more i podvodni.

jet will replace the Air Force’s F-22s and ... in the 2030s.

Citat:The awards of the Adaptive Engine Transition Programme (AETP) contracts to GE and P&W on 30 June extends a nearly 10-year effort to introduce a fuel-saving cruise mode into an engine intended for a supersonic fighter. Both contractors will develop and test multiple new centreline engines sized at a 45,000lb-thrust level.
“We believe GE is best positioned to integrate the adaptive suite of technologies into existing and next-generation combat aircraft,” says Dan McCormick, general manager of GE Aviation's Advanced Combat Engine programmes.
P&W was not immediately available for comment.
The USAF is developing concepts for replacing the Lockheed F-22 after 2030, which includes updating existing designs with new technology. Re-engining the F-35 with an adaptive cycle, 45,000lb-thrust engine is also under study.
An adaptive-cycle engine is intended to address a design limitation in modern powerplants. An engine optimised for subsonic speed is more fuel-efficient, but cannot easily exceed the speed of sound. A supersonic engine, however, can accelerate over Mach 1.0 but is limited in range because it guzzles fuel.
The AETP programme continues development of a technology that could make supersonic engines 25% more fuel-efficient, thus extending the range of a fighter by as much as 30%, according to GE.

Rade na definisanju zahteva, poduzi clanak...
Citat:
WASHINGTON — After undergoing a yearlong effort that explored the tactics and technologies needed to control the skies in the future, the Air Force is taking its first steps toward making its next fighter jet a reality.
The service has already begun preliminary work ahead of a 2017 analysis of alternatives that will shape the requirements and acquisition strategy for the F-35 follow on, which the Air Force been termed Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) or Penetrating Counter Air (PCA).
But Brig. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, who led the Air Superiority 2030 enterprise capability collaboration team (ECCT), emphasized that there are two major differences between the NGAD effort and its that of legacy fighter jets. The first is the relatively rapid method of acquiring it.
“We need to have something by the late 2020s,” he said in an interview with Defense News. “I think a realistic timeline is somewhere around 2028 with key investments in some key technology areas, you’d be able to have some initial operational capability of a penetrating counter air capability.”
The second difference relates to the recently concluded Air Superiority 2030 study, which made the case that the Air Force’s future dominance will rest not on a single platform, such as a sixth generation fighter jet, but on an integrated, networked family of systems. That combination of penetrating and stand-off capabilities includes a fighter plane, but also a number of space, cyber and electronic warfare assets.
What that means is that the fighter jet of the future might look more like a sensor node than the dogfighters of the past, Grynkewich said. The service currently is conducting pre-AOA work at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, to explore emerging technologies and hammer out potential NGAD requirements.
“They’re looking at all of the tradespace of the various attributes,” including lethality, survivability, range and payload, he said.
Citat:The Air Force is trying to flush the words “sixth generation fighter” from its lexicon, Grynkewich said. Even the service’s initial terminology for an F-35 follow on — Next Generation Air Dominance — is being eschewed in favor of the label “Penetrating Counter Air.”
“You start to have an argument over what does 'sixth gen' mean. Does it have laser beams, is it hypersonic? What is it? What does it look like? That’s not a useful conversation,” he explained. “The more useful conversation is, what are the key attributes we need in order to gain and maintain air superiority in 2030?”
The Air Force is looking at incorporating sophisticated, cutting edge technologies like directed energy in the initial version of Penetrating Counter Air (PCA) or a future block upgrade. But ultimately, the service does not want to hold up the program so that a particular sensor or weapon can mature.
The outcome may not turn out to resemble a traditional fighter jet, Grynkewich said.
“I’ve gotten into a little hot water with my fighter pilot brethren over this, because I say things like, ‘Hey, it may not necessarily be a fighter,’” he said, adding that the aircraft will likely still receive the “F” designation reserved for fighter jets. “A typical fighter pilot for air superiority would say you need 9Gs, two tails, a gun, short range. That’s what fighters are. This is something that’s a little bit different and has some different attributes in my mind.”
