The defense ministry insider said the proposal to incorporate 12 former U.S. Navy Vikings into service was approved late last month by a military program review group. The latest development comes after the Navy proposed taking over 20 Vikings that have been kept in storage since 2009 to shore up the country's detection and attack capabilities against Pyongyang's submarine fleet.

ADEX: Lockheed details plan to bring S-3B Viking back

Fearnow, a former S-3B pilot, says the type has a number of attributes that make it suitable for a return to active service. He says the type was retired mainly owing to the absence of a submarine threat to US carrier battle groups with the end of the Cold War, as well as the navy's desire to narrow the number of aircraft types operating from carriers.

Lockheed estimates that the S-3B airframes in storage still have around 10-12,000hrs flying time remaining.

The last pair of U.S. Navy S-3 Vikings took to the air for the final Navy flight at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, California, on Jan. 11.VX-30 was operating the last three S-3Bs when the type was retired from front-line service in 2009. Their duty was to monitor the vast Point Mugu Sea Range.
At least one of the Vikings that launched from Point Mugu that day will continue flying with NASA.

FIDAE 2016: South Korea to pave way for further S-3 Viking sales

Speaking at the FIDAE Airshow in Santiago, Clay Fearnow, Lockheed Martin's director of maritime patrol programmes, said that the approval that is anticipated in the coming months of the sale to the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) could open the way for further sales to two other Asian nations (one of which he identified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), and one South American nation.

"We are talking to three other countries [besides South Korea] with regard to the S-3. If the South Korean programme is approved, then we expect the aircraft to really take off," Fearnow said, adding that interested nations are waiting on the South Korean deal to be finalised before committing.

Krajem 70-tih, američka mornarica konvertovala je 6 S-3A u verziju US-3A COD (Carrier-Onboard-Delivery) za transport različitih vrsta materijala kao i za prevoz ljudstva.
Ovo je promo materijal iz nekog vazduhoplovnog časopisa gde se vidi ukupna količina materijala koja je u jednoj turi mogla biti prevežena sa kopna na nosač aviona (1900 kg).

At NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, one S-3B was being used almost daily as a flight research aircraft. Acquired in 2004 and flown for the next 16 years on a variety of research missions, this S-3B Viking is about to fly off into the sunset and retire at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in California where it will be used to educate the public about its important role in the U.S. Navy and at NASA.

“This is the last S-3B flying today anywhere in the world,” says Jim Demers, Glenn’s Flight Operations Manager. “It’s been a workhorse for NASA, but we just can’t source its unique parts anymore.”

Originally designed by Lockheed Martin as an anti-submarine warfare aircraft, NASA’s S-3B Viking was completely reconfigured in 2006 for flight research purposes. All weapons systems were removed and replaced with civilian avionics, GPS, and satellite communications systems to conduct flight communications research.
