Republic P-47D Thunderbolt Zombie, D-day, 1944. USA
During the D-Day invasion in June 1944, several Republic P-47D Thunderbolts nicknamed "Zombie" were operated by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the European Theater.
Role During the 1944 Normandy Campaign
The P-47 Thunderbolt, often called "The Jug," was a critical asset during and after D-Day.
• Ground Support: "Zombie" transitioned from high-altitude bomber escort to a "low-level bomb-truck," flying close air support (CAS) missions over Normandy.
• Armament: Like other P-47Ds, it was armed with eight .50 caliber machine guns and could carry up to 2,500 lbs of bombs or five-inch rockets to destroy German tanks, locomotives, and supply lines.
• Ruggedness: Known for its ability to survive heavy battle damage, the P-47 was preferred for dangerous low-altitude strafing runs where ground fire was intense.

Dakle Zero, Spitfire, Messerschmitt Bf-109... To i jesu najpoznatiji lovački avioni, najveće legende avijacije Drugog svetskog rata.

1. Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden, “Jack”, Japan/USA, DeAgostini, 1:72, 210 gr.
[Link mogu videti samo ulogovani korisnici]

IXO/DEAGOSTINI 1/72 US CAPTURED MITSUBISHI J2M3 RAIDEN (JACK) FIGHTER JAPAN WWII Item description from the seller
A superb 1/72 diecast Japanese Air Force Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden WWII fighter captured by US forces & painted in a USAF scheme.
Raiden means "Thunderbolt" & the Allied reporting name for the aircraft was "Jack".
It is from a De Agostini series of World War 2 fighters. The models & stands are the same as those released under the IXO brand some years ago, so I'm pretty sure that this series have been made by IXO for De Agostini.
The U.S. Technical Air Intelligence Command (TAIC) tested two captured Mitsubishi J2M Raiden ("Jack") aircraft using high-quality 92 octane fuel supplemented with methanol, achieving performance figures that significantly exceeded those recorded by the Japanese military.
Test Results and Performance
Testing revealed that the J2M was a highly capable interceptor when provided with superior Allied fuel:
• J2M2 (Jack 11): Reached a maximum speed of 407 mph (655 km/h) at 17,400 feet.
• J2M3 (Jack 21): Reached a maximum speed of 417 mph (671 km/h) at 16,600 feet.
Pilot Evaluation
Senior TAIC test pilots rated the Raiden as one of the best Japanese fighters they had flown, citing several key characteristics:
• Strengths: Exceptional stability, good stalling characteristics with rapid recovery, and an impressive climb rate with a steep climbing angle. Its heavy four-cannon armament provided devastating firepower for its role as a B-29 interceptor.
• Weaknesses: The aircraft suffered from "heavy" ailerons at speeds above 325 mph, making high-speed maneuvering difficult. It also had poor braking action, limited operational range, and suffered from mechanical reliability issues.
Notable Captured Aircraft
• TAIC-SWPA S12: A J2M3 captured at Dewey Boulevard, Manila, in early 1945. It was stripped to a natural metal finish and tested at Clark Field until its engine seized on its second flight.
• Survivors: While several Raidens were shipped to the U.S. for further evaluation (including J2M5 variants like FE-318 and FE-319), most were scrapped by 1950.
• Today, only one original J2M3 remains, on display at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.
J2M compared to Allied fighters like the P-47 or Hellcat
The Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Allied code name "Jack") was a departure from traditional Japanese fighter design, prioritizing climb rate and speed over the extreme maneuverability of the A6M Zero.
While it was a formidable interceptor, it faced significant challenges when matched against robust Allied fighters like the P-47 Thunderbolt and F6F Hellcat.
Comparison Overview
The J2M's primary strength was its high power-to-weight ratio, which gave it superior acceleration and climb rates compared to its heavier Allied counterparts.
Feature ....... Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden .... P-47D Thunderbolt .... F6F-5 Hellcat
Primary Role ..... Land-based Interceptor.... Escort/Ground Attack.... Carrier-based Fighter
Max Speed ... ~360–380 mph ...... ... ~430–440 mph .. ... ~380 mph
Climb Rate ........ Superior ......Average (Heavier) ...... Good
Armament ..... 4 x 20mm cannons.... 8 x .50 cal machine guns.... 6 x .50 cal machine guns
Weight (Loaded ) ..... ~7,100 lbs...... ~13,000–17,000 lbs ......~12,000–15,000 lbs
Key Performance Differences
• Maneuverability: Although less agile than the Zero, the J2M could generally out-turn both the P-47 and F6F at low to medium speeds. However, its control surfaces (ailerons) became very heavy at high speeds, making it difficult to roll or maneuver during high-speed dives.
• Altitude Performance: The J2M's performance dropped off significantly above 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) due to supercharger limitations. In contrast, the P-47 excelled at high altitudes, where its turbo-supercharged engine maintained massive power.
• Durability and Protection: The J2M was one of the few Japanese fighters with pilot armor and bulletproof glass, but it was still far less rugged than the Allied "iron works" designs. The F6F and P-47 could absorb immense damage that would down a Raiden.
• Armament: The J2M's four 20mm cannons were devastating against bombers like the B-29, but they had limited ammunition and lower muzzle velocity compared to the high-velocity .50 caliber machine guns favored by U.S. forces, which were better for high-speed dogfighting.
• Combat Effectiveness
In actual combat, the J2M was hampered by mechanical unreliability and a shortage of high-octane fuel, which prevented its engine from reaching its full potential.
While Allied pilots who tested captured Raidens after the war respected its handling and climb, it was ultimately produced in too few numbers (only about 621 units) to significantly impact the air war against the thousands of Hellcats and Thunderbolts it faced.
