Участие пилотов ВВС ГДР в ирано-иракской войне имело место быть, причем на начальном этапе в первой половине 80-х участвовали исключительно вертолетчики на Ми-24, затем был перерыв до 1987, когда подключились летчики на Су-22М4.

Осенью 1987 - весной 1988 гг. было потеряно 3 "немецких" экипажа в один день, когда они решили на следующий день после штурмовиков Су-25 (потерявших в предыдущий день одну машину), атаковать те же позиции иранцев, а их перехватил "лучший персидский кот" F-14A совместно с ЗРК Hawk, всем удалось вовремя "выйти", не доводя дело до критической массы, в общем, половина сразу "отсеялась" и поехала домой на реабилитацию (официально объявили, что они упали с мотоциклов во время мотокросса)
