35 Squadron hands over command amid uncertain future of Dakota fleet
Citat:Formed during World War II, 35 Squadron is one of the SAAF’s most storied units, long associated with maritime patrol and transport operations. Based at AFB Ysterplaat in Cape Town, its crews flew the venerable C47-TP Turbo Dakota, a turboprop conversion of the iconic World War II C-47 Dakota. The squadron has been central to coastal surveillance, fisheries patrols, search and rescue, and anti-piracy missions.

Yet the unit faces an uncertain future. Despite speculation that the C47-TP fleet had been permanently retired, reports of its demise appear to have been exaggerated. Although the last flight of a Turbo Dakota was believed to have taken place on 22 September 2022, the SAAF is currently investigating whether a return to flying status is feasible.

Only five airframes remain viable, three configured for maritime surveillance and two for transport, all in varying stages of maintenance. Remarkably, at least one transport variant continues to undergo ground engine runs, while the squadron maintains safety audits and training days to ensure qualifications remain current. Even without flight operations, the engineering and ground crews are keeping the squadron ready should the aircraft return to the skies.

This Dakota was grounded at Stauning in 2019 and it is generally assumed that this grounding was permanent. Until February 2026!

As one of the final departures from the-almost-to-be-closed Coventry Airport, Douglas C-47 N308SF made its first post restoration flight on 9 June 2026. It made a second flight on the same day, destination Sywell Aerodrome.

Citat:Marshall Aerospace has received a multi-year engineering contract for the Douglas C-47 Dakota Mk III "ZA947" training and display aircraft owned by the UK Royal Air Force's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).
The contract expands the scope of support services currently provided by Marshall, paving the way for the company to take on new responsibilities as co-ordinating design organisation (CDO).
Constructed in 1942 by Douglas, ZA947 entered into U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) service but was soon transferred under lend-lease to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). In 1971, ZA947 was acquired by the British Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and was modified extensively and used for parachute, sonobuoy and radio communications trials.
In early 1990s, ZA947 was adopted by RAF Strike Command and issued to BBMF. The aircraft returned to its home at RAF Coningsby, in summer 2025, from Duxford, where it had spent three years undergoing a major maintenance programme. Following successful completion of all repairs and rectifications and return to flightworthy state, ZA947 is now on show in the BBMF hangar, in 31 Squadron South East Asia Command markings.
The aircraft now serves as an important multi-engine tailwheel training asset, but is also a sought-after display aircraft.
