Government to increase budget for F-16 upgrades
Citat:The Ministry of National Defense is to increase the budget to upgrade the air force’s F-16 warplane fleet from NT$129.6 billion to NT$140.2 billion (US$4.21 billion to US$4.56 billion), a high-ranking defense official said yesterday.
Most of the budget increase aims to boost the number and types of air-to-air missiles the aircraft can carry, said the official, who declined to be named.

Lockheed Martin program to upgrade Greek F-16s to start Monday

Citat:The upgrading program for 85 F-16 fighter airplanes with the Block 70/72 Viper system will be formally launched on Monday, Lockheed Martin’s VP Business Development Initiatives in Europe Dennys Plessas said at a press conference in Thessaloniki.
At a presentation of Lockheed Martin during the Thessaloniki International Fair, Plessas explained the timetable of the upgrade and said “ a great part of the upgrade will take place in Greece.”
The first two years will be spent on engineering for the prototype and the registration of the systems. The installation on Greek fighter jets will take place during the third year of the program, and the Hellenic Airforce pilots will be trained in the fourth year. The training is anticipated to be brief, as he said, because of the exertise of Greek fighter pilots.
The upgrade of the 85 warplanes to Vipers “ will provide the Hellenic Airforce with an entirely new aircraft, as the only element we shall keep is the fuselage,” Plessas said.
He added that the F-16s and the fifth-generation F-22 and F-35 share some technology, including the new radars to be installed (digital sweeping model APG83).
Among other issues, Plessas said that 70% of the Hercules transport planes’s latest edition, J, delivered by Lockheed Martin to Australia “ was made by Greek hands.”

Taiwan to Take Delivery of First Batch of Four Upgraded F-16s in 2019
Citat:The Air Force is scheduled to take delivery of its first four upgraded F-16 fighter jets in the next six months, a military official said Wednesday during a legislative session.

The first of the four upgraded F-16s has completed combat flight testing and all four aircraft in the first batch to be delivered in six months are currently undergoing ground testing by state-owned Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. (AIDC), said Liu Jen-yuan, chief of staff of the Air Force.

Liu was responding to a lawmaker's question about progress in the upgrading of the Ministry of National Defense's (MND) 4 F-16 A/B jets into F-16Vs.

Florennes air base - update

It is reported that a probably clumsy fault of a technician resulted in the explosion at Florennes air base (Belgium), resulting in a write-off of Belgium Air Force (BAF) F-16AM FA128.

In a nearby hangar, positioned at the extension of the flight line, a technician was working on a F-16. By accident, the six-barrels 20mm Vulcan M61A-1 canon of that F-16 was activated. Apparantly, the canon was loaded and some bullets hit the FA128. This aircraft was was just fueled and prepared together with another F-16 for an upcoming afternoon sortie. By the impact of the 20mm bullets, FA128 exploded instantly and damaged two other F-16s. Extremely lucky, nobody got killed, one technician incurred hearing impairment.

The Belgian Aviation Safety Directorate started an investigation. The Belgian Air Force has some 25 F-16s left now."
