The approach is to acquire in one or two lots 40 "Tranche 3" Eurofighter Typhoons, 20 in an initial contract and another 20 in a later contract. A third contract of 20 aircraft is to be acquired later, although this contract does not need necessarily to be the Typhoon, but another variant to maintain the "mix" of the fleet of fighter aircraft without relying solely on a single model. The plan is also known as the 20-20-20 formula.

On 9 January 2020, the last Typhoon was delivered to the Spanish Air Force. The Airbus Military factory at Madrid/Getafe is now responsible for modernizing the first 17 "Tranche 1" Typhoons to the latest version, a contract that will keep it occupied until 2023. The objective of the new approach of the air force is that the acquisition favors the national industry.

The Spanish Air Force currently has 70 Typhoons in service. The aircraft are operated by Ala 11 at Sevilla/Morón and Ala 14 at Albacete/Los Llanos. The new Typhoons will gradually replace the around 85 EF-18M/EF-18BM Hornet fighter aircraft that are operated by three wings; Ala 12 at Madrid/Torrejón (two squadrons of EF-18M/BM), Ala 15 at Zaragoza (three squadrons of EF-18M/BM) and Ala 46 at Gran Canaria (one squadron of F/A-18A+).
