P51D Mustang, John Landers "Big beautiful bird".
Hawker Hurricane Mk1, Peter Townsend.
Messerschmitt BF 109E, Hauptman Hans Von Hahn
Supermarine Spitfire Mk1, Adolf "Sailor" Malan

A ovo? Daaaa...!"

10. Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 „JV44“, Nazi Germany, DeAgostini, 1:72, 155 gr.
[Link mogu videti samo ulogovani korisnici]
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9 (nicknamed "Dora") of the Jagdverband 44 (JV 44) is one of the most famous aircraft in late-war Luftwaffe history, specifically known for its role in the unit's airfield protection flight.
Role and Mission
• Platzschutzschwarm (Airfield Protection Flight): This small, specialized unit of Fw 190 D-9s was formed in early 1945 to provide air cover for Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighters.
• Vulnerability Cover: The Me 262 was highly vulnerable during takeoff and landing due to slow acceleration at low speeds. The "Dora" pilots flew "top cover" to defend against Allied fighters, such as P-51 Mustangs and Tempests, that attempted to ambush the jets near their bases.
• Operational Guidelines: Pilots were ordered to take off before the jets, maintain a 500-meter altitude "umbrella" over the airfield, and were strictly forbidden from breaking formation to chase enemy aircraft.
Distinctive Paint Scheme
• Anti-Friendly Fire Design: To prevent the intense German anti-aircraft (FLAK) batteries from shooting them down by mistake, the undersides of these aircraft were painted bright red with thin white stripes.
• "Papagei Staffel" (Parrot Squadron): This striking color scheme earned the unit the posthumous nickname "Parrot Squadron" among aviation historians and modelers.
• Upper Surface: The top of the aircraft typically featured standard late-war RLM 81/82 or 74/75 camouflage patterns to blend with the ground while parked.
Notable Pilots and Aircraft
• Heinz Sachsenberg: Commanded the flight and flew the famous "Red 1" (W.Nr. 600424).
• Waldemar Wübke: An ace credited with 15 victories, he flew "Red 3" (some sources also mention "White 1").
• Klaus Faber: Flew "Red 13" and is credited with the unit's only probable aerial victory, a P-47 Thunderbolt.
Technical Specifications (D-9 Variant)
• Engine: Junkers Jumo 213A liquid-cooled inline engine, producing up to 2,240 hp with water-methanol injection.
• Armament: Two 20mm MG 151/20 cannons in the wing roots and two 13mm MG 131 machine guns in the nose.
• Performance: Maximum speed of approximately 426 mph (686 km/h)

1. Grumman F6F Hellcat US Navy VF-27, USA, DeAgostini, 1:72, 296 gr.
[Link mogu videti samo ulogovani korisnici]
The Grumman F6F Hellcat of Fighting Squadron 27 (VF-27) is one of the most visually iconic aircraft of the Pacific Theater, famous for its unique and unauthorized "Cat's Mouth" nose art.
The Iconic "Cat's Mouth" Markings
Unlike the US Army Air Forces, the US Navy strictly regulated nose art, favoring uniform markings. VF-27 became a rare exception, featuring a snarling mouth with jagged teeth and whiskers painted across the entire squadron's F6F Hellcats.
• Designers: The artwork was designed by pilots Carl Brown, Richard Stambook, and Robert Burnell during training at Kahului NAS, Maui, in early 1944.
• Purpose: While often mistaken for "shark mouths," they were specifically intended to embody the "ferocity" of the Hellcat name.
• Demise of the Art: After the loss of their home carrier, the nine surviving aircraft landed on other carriers. Their new commanders, unimpressed by the non-standard art, ordered the markings painted out to comply with Navy regulations.
Squadron History & Operations
VF-27 was established in 1943 and saw its most intense combat while embarked on the light carrier USS Princeton (CVL-23).
• Record Performance: During their 1944 deployment, the squadron was credited with 136 victories, 104 of which occurred in just three days—a record for a light carrier (CVL) fighter squadron.
• Loss of the USS Princeton: On October 24, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Princeton was struck by a Japanese bomb and eventually scuttled.
• Notable Pilots:
o LT James A. "Red" Shirley: Scored 12.5 victories and received the Navy Cross for his actions.
o LT Carl Brown: Credited with 10.5 victories, including becoming an "ace in a day" by downing five aircraft in a single mission.
o Ens Gordon Arthur Stanley: A Hellcat ace with 8 victories, including 4 during the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot".
Specifications of the VF-27 Hellcats
The squadron primarily operated the F6F-3 and later F6F-5 variants.
Feature Specification
Engine Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp (2,000 hp)
Top Speed ~380 mph
Armament 6 × .50 caliber Browning machine guns; 2,000 lbs of bombs/rockets
Main Opponent Mitsubishi A6M Zero
