Development of a new aircraft started in January 1954.
The starting point was the Ye-1 (Ye = Yedinitsa, “special construction”) that is supposed to trigger an Mikulin AM-5A turbo-jet engine. The same proved to be not adequate and replaced with improved Mikulin AM-9B which is used to MiG-19. Soon the engine was replaced again, this time with Mikulin AM-11 that had just developed and has been optimized for fast and easy hunters. Designation was changed prototype Ye-2.

As was the custom in the Soviet aerospace industry, aerospace Ye-1 must be based on the concept that the proposed “National Institute of Aerodynamics and hydrodynamics” (Russian acronym – TsAGI). Complications have arisen due to the fact that the proposed two TsAGI configuration. Both included a cylindrical hull with air intakes in the nose, the conventional “stick” tail surface and mid mounted wings. The dilemma was around the shape of wings: one option was arrowy wing at an angle of 55 °, while the other was delta wing at an angle of 57 °. In addition to doubts about the wings, things became complicated because the desired engine AM-11 was not available, so the development should use existing AM-9B. Permission to create the first six prototypes arrived soon and are made:

one Ye-2 with an arrow wing and AM-9B engine
one Ye-2A with an arrow wing and AM-11 engine,
two Ye-4 with a delta wing and AM-9B engine and
two Ye-5 with a delta wing and AM-11 engine.

First Ye-2 is completed at the beginning of the 1955 . During the first flight of the 14th February 1955 Georgiy Mosolov test pilot stated that the aircraft is well-behaved, although he noticed a lack of power as might be expected given that the used engine AM-9B. Nevertheless, he soon proved that it can reach a speed of Mach 1.8.

The first prototype with delta wings, Ye-4, flew on 16th june 1955 Grigory Sedov with the controls. During testing, the experts were shocked by the fact that Ye-4 can reach a maximum speed of Mach 1.2 although only between him and Ye-2 there was no difference except in the form of wings.

Although TsAGI’s Constitution analysis suggested that the delta wing to be effective, so it did not show the reality and the designers started with various modifications and improvements. Over time, the results became better.
First Ye-5 finally flew 9th january 1956 with Vladimir Nefyedomov at the controls. Ye-2A first flew 17th February 1956. Grigory Sedov with the controls, while the second Ye-5 took off at the end of the 1956.
