Switzerland delivers first of 22 F-5 Tigers to United States
Citat:The Swiss Federal Office for Armaments (armasuisse) has begun delivery of 22 decommissioned F-5E/F Tiger II fighter jets to the United States. The first aircraft was picked up by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) on Mar. 18 from Emmen Air Force Station aboard a Lockheed KC-130J transport aircraft.
The sale, finalized in 2020, encompasses 16 single-seat F-5E and 6 twin-seat F-5F variants, along with associated ground equipment, spare parts, and logistical support for in-country storage and preparation for transport to the U.S. The total value of the sale is estimated at $32.4 million USD.

This delivery represents the latest chapter in the retirement of Switzerland’s F-5 fleet, originally procured in the 1970s and 1980s. A significant portion of this fleet, 44 F-5s, were previously sold to the U.S. Navy in 2008. These earlier jets, originally employed by the Swiss Air Force for air defense duties, are now used by the U.S. Navy as adversary aircraft.

The remaining 25 F-5 Tigers in the Swiss inventory continue to serve in a secondary capacity. Currently, 18 are operational, providing target support, pilot training, tow services for gliders, and acting as testbeds for various purposes.

Lagana priča o razvoju, od crteža i priototipa do T-38 i prve generacije F-5 (uključujući F-5C koji su koristili u Vijetnamu), sa dosta poređenja sa konkurencijom i protivnicima. Zanimljivo mi je da se na 3, 6, 9 i 12000m popeo brže od F-104, kao i da nema zabeleženih pobeda nad Migovima (to su kasnije uspeli F-5E u iračko-iranskom ratu).

Citat:Emmen, 11.04.2024 – An important milestone has been reached in the U.S. Navy’s ARTEMIS project: RUAG has handed over the first of a total of 22 F-5 jets to Tactical Air Support (Tactical Air). Acting as a subcontractor on behalf of Tactical Air, RUAG is responsible for performing inspections and selected structural work on the F-5 aircraft and for overhauling the engines.

In July 2022, the U.S. Navy assigned the contract for the ARTEMIS F-5 modernization program to Tactical Air. As a subcontractor of Tactical Air, RUAG is responsible for specific maintenance services on the F-5 airframes and for the overhaul of the GE-J-85 engines. The U.S. Navy acquired the 22 F-5 aircraft from the Swiss government several years ago.

The U.S. Navy’s objective is to use the F-5 fleet for its Red Air training program (tactical pilot training) and to operate these aircraft reliably and cost-effectively until 2040 and beyond.
